No More Holding Back: Huawei's Pura 90 Goes All-In with a 1-Inch Sensor and Gradient Colors

April is a pivotal month in the smartphone market, with many major models scheduled for release. Among the most anticipated is Huawei's Pura Pioneer event. This event is expected to unveil four new devices: the Pura 90, Pura 90 Pro, Pura 90 Pro Max, and the Pura X2. The Pura X2 is poised to be the industry's first horizontally wide-folding phone, while the Pura 90 Pro Max will debut several new imaging technologies.

Since its official rebranding in 2024, the Pura series has been defined by its focus on fashion and photography. However, the Pura 70 and Pura 80 series did not achieve the same level of success as the Mate series. The question now is whether the upcoming Pura 90 series can reignite excitement and deliver a bigger surprise.

A 1-Inch Sensor and Gradient Colors Return: The Pura Series Goes Big

The main highlight of the event is undoubtedly the Pura 90 series. Leaks suggest the lineup will be streamlined to three core models: Pura 90, Pura 90 Pro, and the top-tier Pura 90 Pro Max, discontinuing the previous Ultra model. In a move that will please many photography and gaming enthusiasts, the entire series is rumored to return to a 1.5K resolution flat screen design. This not only reduces edge color distortion and accidental touches but is also more practical for applying screen protectors. The display itself is top-notch, featuring 2160Hz high-frequency PWM dimming for superior eye protection and extremely narrow bezels for a sleek, symmetrical look. In terms of design, Huawei is bringing back the iconic gradient color finish, which was highly popular on the P20 series, as a flagship colorway for the Pura 90.

A significant change appears to be the adoption of a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. While some may see this as a step back, it is a necessary compromise to accommodate the massive imaging system. The Pura 90 Pro Max is expected to house a huge 1-inch main sensor with a multi-stop physical variable aperture, alongside a massive 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens. To fit this hardware, the fingerprint module was likely moved to the side. Beyond the standard models, the Pura X2 is set to be a standout device. As a new "wide-folding" phone, its external screen has an aspect ratio closer to a traditional smartphone, making it highly usable when folded. When unfolded, it offers a small tablet experience with a near 16:10 aspect ratio, addressing key design and usability critiques of previous wide-folding phones.

The Pura 90 Series: Huawei's Battle for a Comeback

The Pura 80 series, released in June 2025, did not meet market expectations. Its sales were a fraction of its predecessor and paled in comparison to the Mate 70 series and competitors like the iPhone 17. The underwhelming performance was attributed to several factors. Firstly, its design was an incremental update over the Pura 70, which disappointed many fans. In contrast, the concurrently released Mate 80 series featured a striking new design that was widely praised. Secondly, as the first flagship to fully feature the native HarmonyOS 5.1, the system's ecosystem was not yet mature, leading to an incomplete user experience that hurt its reputation and sales. These shortcomings led to unprecedented price drops for a Huawei flagship.

The Pura 90 series is therefore not just a hardware update but a plan to rebuild brand trust. By simplifying the lineup, Huawei is clarifying its product positioning: the Pro model will solidify its share in the mainstream imaging market, while the Pro Max will push the limits of hardware to prove Huawei still sets the standard in mobile photography. Crucially, the Pura 90 series will ship with HarmonyOS 6.1. After the Pura 80's market trial, the HarmonyOS ecosystem has entered a period of rapid growth, with hundreds of daily app updates and feature adaptations. This ensures that Pura 90 users will enjoy a much more complete and smooth native HarmonyOS experience from day one.

The 2026 smartphone market is facing a "price hike storm" due to soaring costs of memory components. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Huawei has already demonstrated its strong cost control with the successful budget-friendly Enjoy 90 series. However, the Pura series, as a cornerstone of the brand, must maintain its premium positioning while remaining accessible to consumers. The key challenge for the Pura Pioneer event is to justify its flagship pricing in an era of universal cost increases. If the 1-inch sensor, 200-megapixel telephoto, and gradient color finish are all realized, the Pura 90 series could mark the most significant upgrade since the brand's reinvention. However, with no official launch date announced, we will have to wait for more details to emerge.
