Apple Extends Lifespan of Older Devices with Critical Security Updates

Apple has rolled out a series of important software updates specifically targeting older Apple Watch and Mac models that are unable to upgrade to the latest major operating systems. These releases include watchOS 10.6.2, watchOS 9.6.4, and watchOS 6.3.1, alongside macOS 11.7.11 and Security Update 2026-001 for macOS Catalina.

Unlike typical updates that introduce new features, these patches focus on a critical underlying issue: updating the device's root certificates. According to the update logs, these certificates are fundamental for establishing secure connections with Apple's servers, acting as a digital handshake to verify authenticity and protect data.

The update logs contain a stark warning for users who might consider skipping this installation. Failing to apply this update could result in a significant loss of functionality for affected devices starting in January 2027. The services at risk include some of the most essential functions, such as device activation, iMessage, and FaceTime. In essence, neglecting the update could render a device almost unusable or relegate it to offline-only status.

In terms of hardware compatibility, watchOS 10.6.2 is aimed at users of the Apple Watch Series 4, Series 5, and the first-generation Apple Watch SE. Meanwhile, watchOS 9.6.4 is designed for watches paired with older iPhones, such as the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. Since these phones cannot be upgraded beyond iOS 16, their paired watches remain on the watchOS 9 branch.
