CES 2026: Samsung's Family Hub Refrigerators Get a Hands-Free Upgrade with Voice-Controlled Doors

At Samsung's “The First Look” special event for CES 2026, the company announced a significant upgrade to its Family Hub smart refrigerator lineup, introducing a highly anticipated feature: the ability to open and close the doors using voice commands.

This new functionality is designed to solve common kitchen frustrations. Users can now activate the built-in Bixby voice assistant and simply say “open the refrigerator door” or “close the refrigerator door” for the appliance to automatically comply. For added convenience, the doors are also equipped with a sensor that allows them to be opened or closed with a light tap from a palm or the back of a hand.

Samsung emphasized the practical benefits of this feature in everyday scenarios. For instance, when a user is cooking and has their hands covered in ingredients, they can easily access milk or other items from the fridge without worrying about dirtying the handle or causing cross-contamination.

Beyond the innovative door mechanism, Samsung is also enhancing the intelligence of the Family Hub series. The built-in AI Vision food management system is being upgraded with Google's Gemini AI model. According to Samsung, this advancement will enable the refrigerator to “instantly recognize an unlimited variety of food items.”
