Apart from the foldable smartphone trend, smart wearable devices such as AR glasses or VR headsets are also still popular and developing rapidly. At MWC 2024 which is currently taking place in Barcelona, Oppo itself is showing a prototype for its newest AR glasses by presenting the Air Glass 3 XR. In terms of design, this AR glasses has a fairly standard size with transparent lenses. However, each of these lenses is capable of displaying color images, which Oppo calls the world's lightest binocular AR glasses. It weighs only about 50g and is designed to be worn comfortably all day.

Oppo has made many technical improvements to shrink the glass frame and provide a good experience with a thin transparent display. The plastic waveguide is only 0.88 mm thick and transmits image data from small MicroLED pixels, which can provide up to 1,000 nits of brightness for each eye. The glass has a refractive index of 1.70, very close to the refractive index of 1.5 of glass, helping to minimize the rainbow effect when outside light shines in.

Oppo Air Glass 3 comes with a built-in speaker in the frame, used for both calls and app interaction. To improve privacy and user experience quality, Oppo uses "reverse sound field" technology - people around you cannot hear the sound coming from the Air Glass 3's speakers, only you can hear it. However, Oppo claims the sound quality for listeners is still vivid.

Currently, the Air Glass 3 prototype needs to be paired with an Oppo phone running ColorOS 13 or higher to work. Control of the glasses is done through the trackpads on the frame.

The main novelty of the product is the all-new AI voice assistant, which works on Oppo's own AndesGPT large language model. This AI does not reside on the glasses but requires pairing with a smartphone app for interaction (currently only available in China). AndesGPT is said to be effective at finding information and stringing queries for more complex tasks, such as travel planning.

Recently, Oppo also established an AI center, aiming to find ways to integrate AI with AR and XR in the future. Currently, Oppo Air Glass 3 does not have a specific launch date. It is still just a concept introduction and technical demonstration of Oppo.
