Apple’s Next Big Bet Could Be the Future of the Smart Home

Apple is reportedly diving into robotics, exploring both humanoid and non-humanoid designs. A new research paper hints at their early-stage work on interactive robots, including a Pixar-style lamp, while renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests mass production could begin by 2028—if the project makes it that far. Unlike past secretive ventures, Apple is being unusually transparent, likely to attract top talent in a field where AI-driven advancements are accelerating.

Following the Apple Car’s cancellation and the rocky start of the Vision Pro, Apple is treading carefully. With the home robotics market littered with failures, Apple has a steep climb ahead. But if history is any guide, they might just redefine the category—eventually.

Paris Summit Signals Global Push for AI Regulation

The Paris AI Action Summit marked a major shift in global AI policy, with 60 countries—including Canada, the EU, India, and China—signing a statement promoting inclusive and sustainable AI development. While the U.S. and the U.K. refused to sign, the momentum for regulation is growing. A key takeaway was the launch of the Coalition for Sustainable AI, where nations and tech companies committed to setting environmental standards and optimizing AI efficiency. Though non-binding, these initiatives indicate that sustainability and ethical concerns will be central to AI discussions moving forward.

Another major milestone was Canada’s decision to sign the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention on AI and Human Rights, joining 12 other nations in pledging to regulate AI for privacy, bias, and transparency. However, political shifts in Canada and the U.S. could impact these commitments, with conservative governments potentially rolling back regulations. Despite U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s opposition to AI oversight, the summit demonstrated a global consensus on AI governance. The push for responsible AI development is gaining traction, making it clear that efforts to avoid regulation may not last long.
