DJI has launched a new product, and this time it's the DJI Mic Mini 2, the successor to the Mic Mini from two years ago. Initially, we didn't have towering expectations, as DJI's Mic series is already quite mature with little room for major improvements. However, after getting our hands on it, we found some surprising and delightful upgrades. Let's dive into what the DJI Mic Mini 2 has to offer.
Still Compact, but More Vibrant
At first glance, the Mic Mini 2 is nearly identical to last year's Mic 3 in design, size, and magnetic attachment. The main visible difference is the pickup hole pattern and the color, which shifts from a translucent gray to a translucent white. However, a closer look reveals a small notch at the bottom. With a gentle pry, the front cover comes off, revealing the product's most unique feature: customization.
The Mic Mini 2 comes with eight magnetic, interchangeable front covers in a rainbow of colors: pink, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, indigo, and violet. DJI has also collaborated with four renowned illustrators for an artistic series of covers. This splash of color isn't just for looks; it serves a practical purpose. In our office test, the 'Weak' setting effectively eliminated the hum of air conditioning and computer fans while keeping voices clear and natural. On a busy street during rush hour, the 'Strong' setting impressively isolated human speech from the cacophony of traffic noise, ensuring vocals remained clear and usable.
Beyond noise cancellation, the DJI Mimo App offers three sound presets that act like audio filters. The 'Standard' mode is perfect for general vlogging. If your voice sounds a bit muffled (perhaps from a cold), the 'Bright' mode adds a crisp, airy quality. Conversely, the 'Full' mode enhances low frequencies, giving your voice a rich, resonant quality like a late-night radio host. To top it off, the auto-limiting feature is a lifesaver, preventing audio from clipping or distorting during sudden loud moments, like shouting or screaming on a roller coaster. This feature alone can save takes that would otherwise be unusable.

The transmitters can connect directly to devices like the Osmo Pocket 3 and Action 4 without needing the receiver. This isn't a low-quality Bluetooth connection; it's a full-fledged 48kHz 24-bit high-fidelity audio stream. You can control noise cancellation and recording directly from the camera's screen. For non-DJI users, compatibility remains strong, with a special hot shoe adapter for Sony cameras that eliminates the need for a 3.5mm cable and even allows the camera to power the receiver. The system also supports mixing and matching transmitters from different generations, showcasing DJI's commitment to a cohesive and versatile ecosystem.
A Game-Changer for Entry-Level Microphones
To sum up our experience with the DJI Mic Mini 2, here are the key takeaways. Its advantages include its compact and lightweight design, versatile and stylish customizable covers, excellent audio recording and noise cancellation performance, and unparalleled ecosystem integration. The only minor drawback is that the charging case could have been made smaller to match the tiny transmitters. For new content creators and vloggers on a budget, it's an undeniable knockout deal that is hard to refuse.
