Meta and Oakley Plan Cooperation For Sports Smart Glasses

Meta and Oakley Cooperation

According to a Bloomberg report, Meta is planning to expand its smart glasses product line through a collaboration with the sports glasses brand Oakley. The new model has the internal project name "Supernova 2" and is based on Oakley's Sphaera glasses design. The special feature of this development is the central positioning of the camera in the glasses frame, unlike previous models in which the cameras are attached to the side.

According to the report, the target group for the new smart glasses is cyclists and other outdoor athletes. This approach seems sensible, as Oakley already has an established position in the sports glasses market and is popular with professional athletes. The technical details are not yet fully known, but it is expected that the functions will be similar to the current Ray-Ban Meta Glasses. You have to look at it, such glasses would have to have a good battery life, and be sweat-resistant - but also be lightweight.

Meta's Reality Labs device group also plans to launch new high-end glasses with built-in displays in 2025. Other products currently being developed would compete with Apple's smartwatch and AirPods, Bloomberg's sources said.

The biggest upgrade this year will be a new high-end offering, designed to resemble current Ray-Ban glasses. This model, codenamed "Hypernova," will have a display on the bottom of the right lens that projects information into the user's field of view. Users could use it to run simple software apps, view notifications, and view photos taken with the device.

It is said that the flood of products is part of an attempt to reposition Meta as an AI innovator, with a focus on hardware that can usher in the next era of computing.
