HTVRONT, Cricut, and xTool Show How Heat Presses Are Becoming Desktop Production Systems for Creators

Automatic pressure, lower prices, and modular tools are bringing a once-industrial process into home studios—but a heat press is still only one part of the making workflow.
A custom T-shirt no longer has to begin in a print shop. A creator can place a prepared design on a blank shirt, slide it into an automatic heat press, tap a button, and start aligning the next item while the machine handles pressure, timing, and release.
That sounds like a modest upgrade to an old process. In practice, it captures a larger change in consumer hardware: heat presses are being redesigned for people who make products at a desk or in a spare room, not only for trained operators on a factory floor.
Cricut helped make connected cutting machines familiar to home crafters. HTVRONT pushed large automatic presses toward a roughly $300 price point. Now xTool is trying to turn the press itself into a modular platform for flat transfers, curved objects, vacuum forming, and DTF curing. Together, these products show where the category is heading—and why it still falls short of the “mini factory” description.
The real change is repeatability, not just more heat
Traditional clamshell and swing-away presses can already produce excellent transfers. Their weakness for beginners is that the result depends on controlling three variables at once: time, temperature, and pressure. A setting that works for thin heat-transfer vinyl on a cotton shirt may fail on a thick hoodie, a DTF transfer, or a rigid sublimation blank.
Automatic presses remove some of that physical and mental work. Motors close and reopen the platen, timers reduce the chance of over-pressing, presets shorten setup, and pull-out drawers make it easier to position garments without reaching beneath a hot plate. For a seller making a batch of shirts, the main benefit is not novelty. It is the ability to prepare the next item while the current one is being pressed.
The broader audience is already substantial. Cricut reported 5.87 million active users at the end of 2025 across its connected-machine platform. That figure does not measure heat-press owners specifically, but it shows how large the home and small-studio market for digital making has become.
Cricut Autopress made an industrial-looking tool feel domestic
Cricut Autopress established one of the clearest templates for a home-oriented automatic press. Its 15-by-12-inch plate can handle common apparel and flat blanks, and the machine adjusts pressure automatically before releasing when the timer ends. Four reprogrammable presets keep frequently used settings close at hand.

The design reduces intimidation, but it also shows the compromises of bringing production hardware into a home. The Autopress weighs 53.2 pounds (24.1 kg), needs a sturdy counter, and only works with flat objects. Cricut requires activation on a Windows or Mac computer before first use, although the press itself is not Bluetooth-dependent and its controls remain on the separate control pod.
Cricut's US store listed the machine at $299 at the time of writing, far below its original $999 launch positioning, though availability and regional pricing vary. The lower price makes automatic pressing more accessible, but it also puts pressure on newer competitors to offer more control or more types of project.
HTVRONT added the control that budget users were missing
HTVRONT demonstrated demand for a cheaper automatic press in 2022, when the company said its first Kickstarter campaign sold more than 5,000 machines and raised about $1.1 million. Its current Auto Heat Press 2 is a more useful indicator of the category's direction.

The machine has a larger 15-by-15-inch plate and lets users set pressure from 20 to 80 kg. HTVRONT says it can reach 410°F (210°C) in five minutes and 30 seconds. The standard kit was listed at $297.99 on the company's US site when this article was prepared.
Adjustable pressure matters because automation is only helpful when the press can still adapt to different materials. User reports, however, are mixed. Some owners praise the hands-free workflow for shirts and small batches, while others describe adding a pressing pillow or repeating transfers when thicker garments or DTF films do not receive even pressure. Those comments are anecdotal, but they point to an important distinction: an affordable auto press can reduce effort without matching the durability or fine mechanical control of a commercial machine.
xTool WonderPress tries to make the press modular
xTool is taking a more ambitious route. WonderPress uses a replaceable base so the same upper unit can work as a flat heat press, a 3D-forming system, or a craft oven. The flat module is designed for familiar HTV, sublimation, and DTF transfers. The 3D module targets phone cases, badges, and other curved objects, while the oven can cure DTF film, bend acrylic, shrink plastic, and handle several small craft processes.

That modular pitch resonated on Kickstarter. BackerKit's campaign tracker recorded more than $5.19 million from 9,251 backers between April 28 and June 24, 2026. Early campaign pricing started at $279 for the standalone press and $599 for the three-module bundle.
The product also illustrates why crowdfunding totals should not be treated as a review. xTool's store still lists WonderPress as a preorder and says website orders are expected to ship from September, after early Kickstarter rewards. The product page had no customer reviews when checked. Until regular buyers have used the final hardware over time, claims about 100 kg of pressure, edge-to-edge heat consistency, filtration performance, and module durability remain company claims rather than established real-world results.
A heat press is becoming the finishing station in a desktop workshop
The most useful way to understand this trend is not to compare heat presses directly with 3D printers or desktop CNC machines. Those devices create or cut the object itself. A heat press usually finishes a workflow by bonding a prepared design to fabric or another blank.
That means the press rarely works alone. Heat-transfer vinyl normally needs a cutter. Sublimation requires a compatible printer, ink, paper, and coated blanks. DTF work needs printed film, adhesive powder, curing, and ventilation. Even xTool's multi-module system does not print the artwork that it later presses or forms.
For creators who already own a cutter, sublimation printer, DTF printer, laser, or 3D printer, that is not necessarily a problem. A more capable finishing station can connect those tools into a practical desktop production line. For a beginner, however, the difference between “one machine” and “one complete workflow” is easy to miss.
The remaining friction is physical, material, and digital
Automatic presses are easier to operate, but they are not appliance-simple. Large models can weigh more than 20 kg and occupy most of a craft table. Users still need to learn which temperature, time, pressure, peel method, and protective sheet work with each transfer and substrate. Mistakes waste both blanks and consumables.
Ventilation also matters. Heating vinyl, sublimation materials, adhesives, or DTF powder is different from printing a document. Users should follow the material supplier's safety guidance and avoid treating a bedroom or unventilated corner as a production space. Built-in filtration, where offered, should be evaluated through independent testing and maintained with replacement filters.
Software can either reduce that learning curve or create another dependency. Cricut surrounds its hardware with guides, designs, materials, and subscriptions. xTool offers physical controls plus app-based presets and a design tool for phone cases and badges. The best system for long-term ownership will be the one that keeps essential controls available locally, documents third-party material settings clearly, and does not make a working press dependent on a cloud service that may change later.
Who should consider one now?
An automatic heat press makes the strongest case for someone who already creates apparel, team uniforms, event merchandise, tote bags, or personalized gifts often enough to value repeatability. It can also help a small seller move from one-off projects to short batches without the arm effort and constant attention of a manual press.

A casual crafter making a few items a year may be better served by a smaller handheld press or by outsourcing transfers. A seller who needs high volume, exact pressure readings, easy repairs, and years of daily use should still compare these consumer machines with established commercial presses.
The category is not becoming interesting because heat pressing is new. It is becoming interesting because manufacturers are packaging repeatable pressure, safer handling, presets, and multiple finishing processes for people who do not think of themselves as print-shop operators.
Cricut simplified the experience. HTVRONT made adjustable automatic pressure cheaper. xTool is testing whether one modular platform can support a wider range of objects. If those systems prove reliable, the heat press may become a standard companion to the cutter, printer, laser, or 3D printer in a small creative workspace. It is not a desktop factory by itself—but it is starting to look like the station that ties one together.
