A few days ago, MacRumors unearthed a promotional video from the macOS Tahoe 26.7 RC, showcasing a user wearing AirPods, picking up a book, and having Visual Intelligence recognize the title for Siri to save. This feature is part of a project codenamed B790, slated for Apple's 2026 roadmap, with a mass-production version, B798, expected in 2027.

Newly discovered system code provides our first clear look at how these earbuds "see," and the most intriguing detail is a seemingly modest specification: the camera on the AirPods is only 1 megapixel. In an era where smartphones boast 200-megapixel sensors and 8K video, Apple's camera for its future AI hardware might capture images as small as 320×320. Clearly, this camera isn't designed for taking photos.

Why only a 1-megapixel camera on the AirPods?

The leaked code suggests the camera system has at least two operating modes. In active mode, it captures 640×640 images, which can be processed up to 1024×1024. In passive mode, it captures 320×320 images, outputting at either 320×320 or 512×512. The system is designed to synchronize RGB still images from both left and right AirPods, aligning the two perspectives with a common Frame ID and continuously feeding this data to the Visual Intelligence system. This visual data is combined with ambient audio, head rotation, and motion information. For AI, a high-resolution 48-megapixel photo is often unnecessary. The model just needs to know there's a book on the table, a restaurant ahead, or what a sign says. A 320×320 image is sufficient. Lower resolution means less data, reducing the burden on processing and transmission, which is critical for managing power consumption and battery life in a small, all-day wearable device. The camera's purpose is to serve the machine first; the image can be deleted once understood.
