Commodore 77 Turns the C64 Revival Into a Cyberpunk 2077 Collector’s Machine
Commodore and CD PROJEKT RED have announced the Commodore 77, a Cyberpunk 2077-themed special edition of the Commodore 64 Ultimate retro computer. The device is available for pre-order now at $377 and is expected to ship in early 2027.
This is not just a red-and-yellow paint job. Commodore says the Commodore 77 is its first-ever franchise hardware partnership, combining a Night City-inspired design with upgraded FPGA hardware and an exclusive Cyberpunk 2077 demo experience.
A C64 Rebuilt for Night City
The Commodore 77 is based on the Commodore 64 Ultimate, a modern FPGA-powered recreation of the classic Commodore 64. The new version adds a smoked translucent grey case, a brushed metal plate, turquoise lighting, graffiti-style details, and LEDs in the base that can react to music.
The package also leans heavily into Cyberpunk 2077’s world. Buyers get a custom Commodore 77 BASIC 2.0 boot screen, new menu colors, a neon power light, stickers, pins, collectible packaging, and a spiral-bound user guide with Cyberpunk 2077 lore and themed BASIC programs.
That makes the product feel closer to a playable collector’s item than a normal retro console refresh.
Exclusive Demo Cartridge
One of the most interesting additions is an exclusive Cyberpunk 2077 demo cartridge. The non-interactive demo was created by Polish C64 demo group Arise, with an original soundtrack by chiptune artist LukHash.
According to Commodore, the demo uses features from the enhanced Commodore 64 Ultimate line, including 24 channels of stereo SID chip music and a 2MB cartridge chip. The demo cartridge is only included with the Commodore 77.
For retro computing fans, that detail matters. The C64 demoscene has always been about pushing old hardware in strange, creative ways. Commodore 77 seems built to celebrate that culture rather than simply selling nostalgia.
Faster FPGA Hardware Inside
The Commodore 77 also gets a hardware bump. Instead of the AMD Artix XC7A50T FPGA used in the standard Commodore 64 Ultimate, the Commodore 77 uses an AMD Artix XC7A100T FPGA.
Commodore says the machine can reach up to 77MHz, compared with the original Commodore 64’s roughly 1MHz processor speed. The company also says the system remains compatible with more than 99.9% of over 10,000 existing C64 games and peripherals.
That does not make it a modern gaming PC, and it is not meant to run Cyberpunk 2077 itself. It is still a C64-style retro computer, just rebuilt with modern FPGA hardware and a Cyberpunk shell.
