Google Assistant Is Retiring: "Hey Google" Hands the Baton to Gemini Next Month
Google is officially pulling the plug on mobile Google Assistant. In an email sent to Android users, the company announced that Google Assistant will begin winding down on September 4, 2026, with eligible Android devices transitioning to Gemini as their default digital assistant.
The Timeline
According to a report from Android Authority, the migration will kick off on September 4 and roll out in batches over the following weeks. Once a device makes the switch, there's no going back—users won't be able to reactivate Google Assistant on their phones, tablets, or paired accessories.
What Changes for Users?
On supported Android devices, Gemini will become the default assistant. Whether you say "Hey Google" or long-press the power button, Gemini will be the one responding. And the shift doesn't stop at your phone: once Gemini is set as the mobile assistant, connected compatible devices—including Wear OS smartwatches and supported headphones and earbuds—will automatically follow suit.
Google's Assistant help page now displays a banner stating that Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices. The company claims Gemini can handle the same commands while delivering a more natural, conversational experience.
The Broader Roadmap
This isn't a surprise move. Google had already signaled that Gemini would eventually take over across the entire ecosystem—Android phones, tablets, cars, watches, TVs, and beyond. Over the past year, Google has been steadily adding features to Gemini while quietly sunsetting legacy Assistant capabilities.
The full transition is expected to continue through 2026, with Google promising more details as it works toward what it calls a "seamless" handover.
What If Your Device Can't Run Gemini?
There's a temporary reprieve for some users. If your device doesn't meet Gemini's minimum hardware requirements, or if Gemini hasn't launched in your region yet, Google Assistant will remain available—for now—until the complete retirement plan is finalized.
