Nothing OS 5.0 Starts Rolling Out With Android 17, New Glyph Controls, and Essential Apps

Nothing OS 5.0 is here, and the update gives Nothing phones a cleaner look, more personalization, and a bigger push into AI-powered phone experiences.

Based on Android 17, Nothing OS 5.0 begins its open beta rollout on August 26, 2026, starting with Nothing Phone (3). More devices will join the beta over the next few months, while stable releases are scheduled to begin in mid-October.

What’s New in Nothing OS 5.0?

Nothing OS has always leaned on a sharp black-and-white visual identity. Version 5.0 keeps that personality, but makes the system feel more flexible.

The update introduces a refreshed visual design, a new system typeface, redesigned Settings pages, cleaner status bar layouts, transparent widget details, and subtle color effects for app icons. There is also a new default home screen theme, with wallpaper-aware system colors that help the interface feel more personal without losing Nothing’s minimalist style.

The lock screen gets more clock styles and color options, including new designs such as Gooey and Micrographics. System animations are also smoother, while Bluetooth controls in Quick Settings have been redesigned for faster pairing and switching.

Glyph Gets Its Own App

One of the most important changes is the new standalone Glyph Interface app.

For Nothing phones with Glyph lighting, this makes the back-light features easier to control in one place. Nothing says users can start Glyph Timer directly from the home screen, customize the Essential Key, and use Super Mic on Ear (3) to capture audio.

That matters because Glyph has always been one of Nothing’s most recognizable hardware ideas. Giving it a dedicated app makes it feel less like a visual trick and more like a real system feature.

Essential Space and AI Get More Useful

Nothing OS 5.0 also expands the company’s AI direction through Essential Space and Essential Apps.

Essential Voice is said to run faster, while Essential Space adds MCP support. The update also introduces Essential Apps Builder, which lets users describe what they need in natural language and build small apps or widgets directly on the phone, without coding.

This could become one of Nothing’s more interesting software ideas. Instead of treating AI as a separate chatbot, Nothing is trying to make it part of the phone’s home screen and daily workflow.

Android 17 Adds Practical System Changes

Because Nothing OS 5.0 is based on Android 17, it also brings several platform-level improvements.

Notifications and Quick Settings can now be separated into different spaces. Quick Share is stronger, including file sharing with nearby Android devices and QR-code sharing for iPhone and other devices through a secure web link.

The update also improves screen recording, adds live updates in the status bar, refines the recent apps screen, expands dark theme support, introduces Noto 3D emoji, and improves privacy controls for camera, microphone, and location access.

Should You Install the Beta?

If you use a Nothing Phone (3) as your main device, it may be worth waiting for early user feedback before joining the beta. Open beta builds can include bugs, battery issues, app compatibility problems, or missing polish.

For most users, the stable update will be the better choice. But if you like testing new software early, Nothing OS 5.0 looks like one of the brand’s bigger updates, especially for personalization, Glyph controls, and AI-powered Essential Apps.

Nothing’s challenge is clear: it needs to keep its phone software distinctive without making it feel gimmicky. Nothing OS 5.0 seems to move in the right direction by turning visual identity, system controls, and AI tools into everyday features rather than just design language.
