Google's Answer to the HomePod Mini? New Compact Smart Speaker Spotted

A potential new challenger in the compact smart speaker market has emerged. On August 21, tech media reported that a small, round smart speaker was spotted during a Made by Google event. Wrapped in fabric and featuring a compact design, this unannounced device is speculated to be a new addition to the Nest family, positioned as a direct competitor to Apple's HomePod Mini.

The device was subtly placed next to F1 driver Lando Norris during the event's live broadcast. Viewers quickly noticed its striking resemblance to the Apple HomePod Mini in size and shape. However, it features the familiar fabric-wrapped style characteristic of Google's Nest product line, indicating it is likely an upcoming Google device.

Apple's HomePod Mini has carved out a significant niche in the smart speaker market, praised for its impressive sound quality and deep integration with Siri. It serves not only as a smart home hub for HomeKit but also fits seamlessly within the broader Apple ecosystem, making it a popular choice for Apple users.

In contrast, Google's current compact offering, the Nest Mini, has primarily been marketed as a utility device. While excellent as a voice assistant for controlling smart devices and answering queries, its audio performance is not its main selling point, leaving a gap in Google's lineup for a small speaker with high-quality sound.

The appearance of this mysterious new speaker suggests that Google may be preparing to launch a "Nest Audio Mini." Such a product would aim to compete directly with the HomePod Mini by combining a small footprint with superior audio performance. This would fill the existing product gap between the assistant-focused Nest Mini and the larger, more powerful Nest Audio.

If this new device comes to market, it could offer consumers a compelling alternative that provides both advanced smart home control and a premium listening experience. For now, this remains speculation based on the brief appearance, but it points toward an exciting potential shift in Google's smart home strategy.
