LECOM’s Katoki Hajime MAPP Mouse Is Getting a Revival 24 Years After Its Original Release

ELECOM is bringing back another cult-favorite piece of early-2000s hardware design. After reviving the Masamune Shirow version of its MAPP mouse, the Japanese peripheral maker is now preparing a reproduction of the Katoki Hajime-designed model.

The original MAPP series launched in 2002, when ELECOM collaborated with Ghost in the Shell creator Masamune Shirow and acclaimed mecha designer Hajime Katoki on a pair of futuristic mice. Katoki’s version stood out with a more symmetrical shape than Shirow’s model, while still carrying the hard-edged, mechanical sci-fi look that defined the era.

The new reproduction was announced on July 24 by Japanese model magazine Hobby Japan, which is working with ELECOM on the project. Details such as pricing, launch date, and availability have not yet been confirmed.

ELECOM also announced a new red color variant for the revived Masamune Shirow MAPP mouse, giving collectors and design fans another option in the lineup.

For fans of retro tech, mecha aesthetics, and experimental peripheral design, the return of the Katoki Hajime MAPP mouse feels like a small but very specific piece of hardware history coming back into view.
