IDC Report: Global Smartphone Shipments Grow Slightly in 2025Q2, Samsung Leads the Way
According to a recent report by IDC, the global smartphone market saw a marginal increase in shipments during the second quarter of 2025. The report indicates a 1.0% year-over-year growth, with total shipments reaching 295.2 million units.
While the market experienced positive growth, IDC notes that several macroeconomic factors, including tariff fluctuations, foreign exchange instability, unemployment, and inflation, have dampened consumer demand for smartphones, particularly in the lower-end segment.
Nabila Popal, Senior Research Director at IDC, commented on the situation, stating that economic uncertainties are causing a compression of demand in the low-end market, where price sensitivity is highest. This pressure on the lower-end Android market is subsequently impacting overall market growth.
In China, despite promotional activities such as the 618 shopping festival and government subsidies, mobile device manufacturers and channel partners focused on clearing existing inventory rather than increasing shipments.
Samsung emerged as a strong performer, solidifying its market leadership with the launch of new Galaxy A36 and A56 models, achieving a notable 7.9% year-over-year increase in shipments.

Here’s a summary of the top 5 companies in terms of global smartphone shipments for 2025Q2:
1. Samsung: 58.0 million units (19.7% market share, 7.9% YoY growth)
2. Apple: 46.4 million units (15.7% market share, 1.5% YoY growth)
3. Xiaomi: 42.5 million units (14.4% market share, 0.6% YoY growth)
4. vivo: 27.1 million units (9.2% market share, 4.8% YoY growth)
5. Transsion: 25.1 million units (8.5% market share, -1.7% YoY decline)

In conclusion, the global smartphone market is experiencing modest growth, but macroeconomic challenges are impacting consumer demand, particularly in the low-end segment. Samsung's strong performance highlights its ability to navigate these challenges and maintain its leading position.
