Samsung's 'Mind-Reading' Earable Detects Your Preferences with 92.85% Accuracy

Samsung, in collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Hanyang University, has announced the development of a novel ear-worn electroencephalogram (EEG) device designed to monitor the wearer's brainwaves. This breakthrough was detailed in a company blog post on October 6th.

This innovative EEG device is significantly more compact than traditional electroencephalographs that require electrodes to be attached to the scalp. Despite its small size, it is capable of capturing high-quality brainwave signals essential for Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology.

Thanks to its discreet design, this ear-worn EEG device brings brainwave monitoring out of the laboratory and into everyday life. For instance, it can monitor a user's drowsiness in real-time, a feature that could be used in educational settings to gauge student concentration or in driving scenarios to provide more accurate fatigue warnings.

The device can also work in tandem with artificial intelligence algorithms to accurately analyze a user's personal preferences. In an internal test conducted by Samsung, the device achieved an astonishing 92.85% accuracy rate in identifying participants' video preferences by analyzing their brainwave data as they watched various content.

Looking ahead, this technology is poised for deep integration with a wider range of consumer electronics. Researchers envision that similar brainwave monitoring functions could be incorporated into AR glasses, XR headsets, or wireless earbuds.

For AR/XR devices, it could offer a completely new hands-free interaction method, allowing users to control devices simply through their 'thoughts.' When integrated into wireless earbuds, it could perceive the user's emotional state, such as determining whether you are feeling tired of or enjoying the movie you are watching. This innovation paves the way for a new generation of truly intuitive and personalized electronics.
