Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro Could Bring AI Frame Generation to Flagship Phones

Qualcomm’s rumored Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro could make AI-assisted gaming one of the main selling points of the next generation of premium Android phones. A new report from Notebookcheck points to a 2nm manufacturing process, an upgraded Adreno GPU, LPDDR6 support, and dedicated hardware for upscaling and frame generation.

None of these specifications has been confirmed by Qualcomm, but the leak offers an early look at how the company may separate its standard and Pro flagship chips.

AI Frame Fusion Could Be the Biggest User-Facing Upgrade

The reported SM8975 chip is expected to use an Adreno 850 GPU with two dedicated Matrix ALU blocks. These blocks are designed to accelerate the matrix calculations used by AI workloads.

According to Notebookcheck, they support a feature called AI Frame Fusion. One mode would combine motion vectors, depth information, previous frames, and a lower-resolution image to produce a 1080p or 1440p output. Another would insert a generated frame between two rendered frames using motion and optical-flow data.

In practical terms, compatible games could appear smoother or run at higher resolutions without requiring the GPU to render every pixel and frame conventionally. The tradeoff is that frame generation can introduce visual artifacts or additional latency, so implementation and game support will matter more than the feature name.

A 2nm Chip That May Still Be Larger and More Expensive

Notebookcheck estimates the chip’s die size at approximately 134 mm², based on reported package dimensions. That would make it larger than the 126.2 mm² Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 despite the move from TSMC’s N3P process to the newer N2P node.

The report also models a raw silicon cost of roughly $84.62 per usable chip. However, that figure depends on assumed wafer prices and defect rates. It does not include packaging, testing, licensing, the modem, or other components, so it should not be treated as Qualcomm’s selling price.

Even so, the combination of a larger die, a new process and LPDDR6 memory could increase the cost of next-generation flagship phones.

Qualcomm May Create a Wider Standard-versus-Pro Gap

The Pro chip reportedly combines the Adreno 850 with 18 MB of graphics memory, 16 MB of shared L2 cache and 8 MB of system-level cache. It may support both LPDDR5X and LPDDR6 memory.

By comparison, the standard SM8950 is expected to use a reduced Adreno 845 GPU, 12 MB of graphics memory and LPDDR5X only. If accurate, this would create a more visible performance split between standard flagship phones and ultra-premium gaming or camera-focused models.

Qualcomm has not announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, and there are no independently tested devices yet. For buyers, the important questions will be whether AI Frame Fusion works across popular games, how much power it saves, and whether those gains justify another increase in flagship phone prices.
