ASUS ROG XG Station 3 Debuts Thunderbolt 5 and BTF Power
The ASUS ROG XG Station 3 has officially launched, arriving roughly 1.5 years after it was first previewed to the public. Engineered for laptop users and handheld console gamers who want desktop-class graphical output at their desk, the new external GPU dock introduces high-speed Thunderbolt 5 connectivity alongside proprietary GC-HPWR support for cable-free graphics cards. However, its open-frame design leaves internal hardware exposed to ambient dust, and buyers must supply their own compact power unit to get it running.

Open-Air Chassis Built for Massive Modern Cards
Rather than sealing components inside a traditional enclosed box, the ROG XG Station 3 relies on an open-air structure. This architecture avoids the thermal throttling common in compact external enclosures by giving high-draw graphics cards unrestricted airflow from all sides. The physical clearance is generous enough to handle substantial modern hardware, accommodating graphics cards measuring up to 361 × 139.3 × 93.9 mm. That width and length clearance comfortably accommodates high-end multi-slot desktop cards.
Because the unit does not come with integrated power, builders need to source a compatible power supply based on ASUS specifications. The dock accepts power supplies in SFX or SFX-L form factors, with a requirement of at least 750W capacity and an 80 PLUS Gold or higher energy efficiency rating to sustain peak power delivery under load.
GC-HPWR Slot and High-Bandwidth Thunderbolt 5 Ports
One of the primary hardware distinctions on the ROG XG Station 3 is the integration of an onboard GC-HPWR connector finger. This interface enables native compatibility with ASUS BTF (Back-To-the-Future) series graphics cards, drawing primary power directly through the dock connection without requiring visible PCIe power cables draped over the card.
For data and peripheral expansion, the enclosure utilizes the high-bandwidth Thunderbolt 5 standard:
- Upstream host port: Supports up to 140W USB Power Delivery output, allowing high-performance notebooks to charge directly through the main connection cable.
- Downstream port: Features one secondary Thunderbolt 5 port with up to 36W USB Power Delivery for chaining displays or high-speed storage.
- Peripheral connectivity: Adds two USB-C 10Gbps ports for external drives and desktop accessories.
- Aesthetics: Houses an integrated Aura Sync RGB lighting zone for synchronized desktop illumination.
Would the cable-free look of a BTF graphics card push you toward an open-air dock like the ROG XG Station 3, or do you prefer fully enclosed external GPU cases to keep dust and fan noise contained?
