India's Smartphone Market Sees Steepest Decline in Three Years, Shipments Drop 13% in Q2 2026
According to a report released by Omdia, India's smartphone shipments experienced a significant 13% year-over-year decline in the second quarter of 2026, falling to 33.9 million units. This marks the most severe single-quarter year-over-year drop the market has seen in nearly three years.

The research firm attributes this downturn to a combination of rising memory costs, which have driven up the prices of devices, and persistent macroeconomic headwinds. Several other factors have exacerbated the situation, including delayed consumer upgrades ahead of the festive promotional season, the depreciation of the Indian Rupee, ongoing inflation, and weaker-than-expected retail foot traffic during the summer months.
Looking ahead, Omdia forecasts that India's cumulative smartphone shipments for 2026 will see a double-digit decline. The high cost of memory components is expected to keep smartphone prices elevated for the remainder of the year. The firm suggests that a return to normal pricing levels is unlikely to occur before the first half of 2027.

From a vendor perspective, the top five smartphone brands in India for Q2 2026 were vivo, leading the market with 6.3 million units shipped, followed by Samsung with 5.9 million units. OPPO secured the third position with 4.6 million units, while Xiaomi and Apple rounded out the top five with 4.5 million and 3.5 million units shipped, respectively.

In conclusion, the Indian smartphone market is currently navigating a challenging period marked by supply-side cost pressures and dampened consumer demand due to economic instability. The data points to a prolonged slump, with a significant market recovery not anticipated until 2027.
