Inside Microsoft's Lab: How 300 Iterations Produced the World's First Magnetic USB-C Port

The Verge got a rare inside look at Microsoft's design labs this week, revealing just how far the company went to make the Surface Laptop Ultra a genuine rival to Apple's MacBook Pro. The answer: roughly 300 design iterations — and one engineering obsession that took years to solve.

World's First Magnetic USB-C Port

The Magnetic Connect Breakthrough

The star of the story is Magnetic Connect, Microsoft's reimagined take on the magnetic charging port. The design brief came with a hard constraint, as Surface design chief Jit Hirani explained:

"Throughout the development of Surface Laptop Ultra, our engineering team iterated about 300 times to create the world's first device with a built-in magnetic USB-C port. Our only constraint from day one was that we couldn't alter the universal USB-C connector."

No Compromises, Just Magnetism

Rather than sacrifice a USB-C port for a proprietary connector, Microsoft built the magnetic system around the standard USB-C interface. The experience mirrors the original Surface Connect: an LED charging indicator, no need to align the cable precisely, and it snaps into place. Better still, you can unplug the cable from the 140W charger, flip it around, and use the other end's regular USB-C connector to charge other devices.

Years in the Making

According to Microsoft's team, the magnetic USB-C solution took years of quiet development. When asked whether the technology would spread to more Surface devices, the answer was telling: "We'll see. We've poured a lot of heart into this technology. We wanted to introduce it to the world here."
