Nokia and Samsung Sign New Licensing Agreement For TV Technologies

Nokia and Samsung Agreement agreement for TV technologies

Samsung and Nokia are close, although not as close as one might have imagined a few months ago. Last year, Bloomberg had started rumors about a possible sale of Nokia's Mobile Networks division to Samsung or other potential buyers. The Finnish company, however, denied it, saying it had nothing to comment on these unfounded rumors.

Now, however, comes official news announcing the signing of a licensing agreement on Nokia technologies for video transmission. The agreement provides for the payment of royalties for the use of Nokia's patented technologies on board  Samsung televisions. There are no details on the specific technologies involved or on the duration of the contract. In any case, this is a new agreement, separate from the existing one relating to Nokia patents on 5G.

“We are delighted to have reached an agreement with Samsung to use our video technologies in their high-end TVs,” said Arvin Patel, chief licensing officer, New Segments at Nokia. “The agreement is another demonstration of Nokia’s leadership in video and multimedia technologies and a further validation of our decades-long investment in R&D and standardization of multimedia technologies.”

For more than 25 years, the Finnish company has developed over five thousand innovations that are valuable for multimedia products and services. It has also spent over $150 billion in research and development from 2000 to today ($4 billion in 2023 alone) in the area of multimedia and cellular communications.
