Apple Expands RAW Camera Support to Vision Pro and More Devices

Apple has recently updated its list of digital cameras that support the RAW format, adding 11 new models. This significant update extends compatibility across Apple's entire ecosystem, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and notably, the Vision Pro running the new visionOS 2 system.

This system-level support for RAW files across all Apple devices is a major benefit for photographers. It means users can directly open and edit original RAW image files within compatible applications. This allows for extensive adjustments to parameters like exposure, color, and detail, providing immense creative freedom in post-production.

The primary advantage of the RAW format over JPEG lies in its flexibility. A JPEG is a compressed, finished image where the camera has already performed most of the image processing, locking in many parameters. Consequently, the scope for post-editing is very limited, and aggressive adjustments can easily lead to a loss of image quality.

In contrast, a RAW file preserves the complete, unprocessed data captured by the camera's sensor. This wealth of information makes it far more malleable, allowing for significant changes without degrading the image's integrity, which is crucial for professional and enthusiast photographers.

With this latest update, the total number of digital cameras officially supported by Apple's operating systems has reached 562. Apple consistently expands this compatibility list to include new and older camera models. Some of the newly added cameras include the FUJIFILM FinePix F600EXR, FUJIFILM FinePix HS20EXR, Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ45, and the Phase One IQ3 100MP Trichromatic.
