Apple's 'HomePad' Leaked: An AI Smart Hub with Face ID That Recognizes Your Family

Recent findings from an analysis of Apple's internal code by Mac World on December 11 have brought to light two new potential smart home devices. The code reveals a smart home hub codenamed "J490," unofficially dubbed "HomePad," and another new product with the codename "J229," which is speculated to be Apple's first smart security camera.

HomePad Hardware Specifications

The code suggests that the smart home hub, J490 or "HomePad," will be a powerhouse, equipped with an Apple A18 chip. It is also slated to feature a front-facing ultra-wide camera with Center Stage support, combining the computational power of an iPad with the audio characteristics of a HomePod. While the camera's resolution is noted to be 1080p, this is more than sufficient for high-quality FaceTime video calls directly from the device, without needing an iPhone or iPad.

Apple's 'HomePad'

What truly sets the "HomePad" apart from its competitors is the integration of Face ID. The code analysis indicates its primary function extends beyond simple authentication; it's designed to identify "who is in the room." Powered by the A18 chip, the device will leverage facial biometrics to automatically switch between user accounts. This allows Apple Intelligence to deliver a personalized interactive experience, seamlessly providing the correct calendar, preferences, and messages for each family member, thus achieving true multi-user functionality.

Mysterious Accessory J229, Estimated to be an Apple Smart Security Camera

In addition to the smart hub, the code uncovered a previously unknown device codenamed "J229." It is defined within the system as an "accessory" rather than a standalone host, featuring multiple built-in sensors, image capture capabilities, and alarm sound detection. This strongly suggests it is a monitoring device with visual capabilities, likely Apple's long-rumored smart security camera. Its design might even pay homage to the classic iSight camera while being fully integrated into the modern smart home ecosystem.

This discovery aligns with previous reports from Bloomberg about Apple's work on a smart security camera. It is believed this camera will be released ahead of other rumored products like a smart doorbell and will likely work in tandem with the HomePad to offer more precise home security monitoring services.

Siri Enhancement

These hardware leaks are accompanied by news of a fundamental overhaul of Siri, discovered within internal iOS 26 code and targeted for a Spring 2026 release. The new version of Siri is set to move beyond rigid, pre-set voice commands. Code analysis reveals that the upgraded Siri will be able to understand user actions on a device in real-time, recognizing on-screen content and open applications to provide truly intelligent, context-aware assistance.

Crucially, this enhanced Siri will not be exclusive to iPhones, iPads, or Macs. The code explicitly references the J490 device, positioning the HomePad as Apple's first dedicated AI home hub. This combination of advanced hardware and a more intelligent Siri points to a significant strategic push by Apple to create a more deeply integrated and personalized smart home experience.
