Punkt. MC03 Launches: A Privacy-Focused Smartphone with a 'Made in Germany' Label
The Punkt. MC03 smartphone has officially launched overseas, marketed with a "Made in Germany" label and a strong focus on user privacy. Powered by the Swiss-developed AphyOS, which is based on GrapheneOS, the device is priced at €745.
A significant change from its initial announcement in January is the removal of a mandatory subscription model. Punkt. has abandoned the previously stated plan to charge a €10/month fee after the first year. Now, users will have permanent access to all the phone's services without any recurring costs, a welcome move for consumers.
Under the hood, the MC03 is equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset, paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, which is expandable via a microSD card. The device features a 6.67-inch OLED display with a 2436x1080 resolution, a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 550 nits. It also includes an in-display fingerprint sensor for security.
In the camera department, the phone sports a triple-lens setup on the back, consisting of a 64MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP macro lens. For selfies, it has a 32MP front-facing camera. A robust 5200mAh battery powers the device, supporting 30W wired fast charging and 15W wireless charging. The phone also boasts an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
The standout feature is its software. AphyOS offers a clean user interface and introduces a "privacy bubble" feature, which runs all third-party applications in isolated, sandboxed environments to protect user data. Punkt. promises three years of feature updates and five years of security patches, ensuring long-term support.
While promoted as "Made in Germany," it is more likely that the phone is assembled in Germany using components sourced from Asian supply chains. Nevertheless, the Punkt. MC03 presents a compelling option for users prioritizing privacy and data security, now made more attractive by the removal of its subscription fee.
