Huawei Mate 80 Series Fully Leaked: The Ultimate HarmonyOS Flagship is Coming?

Huawei's next major release is finally taking shape. According to leaker "Digital Chat Station," several new Huawei devices have been filed for certification, which, based on previous release cycles, points directly to the upcoming Mate 80 series. The lineup is expected to mirror its predecessor with four distinct models: the Mate 80, Mate 80 Pro, Mate 80 Pro+, and the premium Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design.

As the annual flagship, the Mate 80 series is set to debut two of Huawei's biggest innovations: the Kirin 9030 chipset and HarmonyOS 6. The former promises a significant performance boost, while the latter focuses on deep AI integration and system interaction. The Mate series has consistently been a critical and commercial success for Huawei; for context, the preceding Mate 70 series sold approximately 6.36 million units as of July this year, making it the best-selling flagship series of the year. However, with competitors like Apple, Xiaomi, vivo, and OPPO having already released their new flagships, the Mate 80 faces immense pressure to continue this sales legacy.

New Kirin and HarmonyOS 6: The Power Behind the Mate 80

The Mate series has always been the launch vehicle for the latest Kirin chips, and the Mate 80 is expected to continue this tradition by debuting the Kirin 9030. This new chipset is built on an N+3 process and features a 1+3+4 Taishan core architecture. Early benchmark leaks suggest a score of around 4.2 million, placing it very close to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5's score of approximately 4.4 million. While there might be a slight gap in raw scores, the Kirin 9030 is expected to excel in power efficiency thanks to a higher transistor count and proprietary scheduling algorithms.

Beyond raw performance, the Kirin 9030's most exciting feature is its enhanced AI capabilities. It will likely feature a more powerful NPU to synergize with the advanced AI functions of HarmonyOS 6, such as proactive services and autonomous learning. As the first series to launch with HarmonyOS 6 pre-installed, the Mate 80 will offer the most comprehensive native Harmony experience yet. This includes a revamped Celia assistant that acts with "proactive awareness," learning user habits to provide timely information, like movie showtimes for a user who typically watches films on weekends. Following previous strategies, the new Kirin 9030 will likely be exclusive to the Mate 80 Pro, Pro+, and RS models, with the standard version retaining the Kirin 9020.

What Stands Between the Mate 80 and Legendary Status?

While last year's Mate 70 series was a runaway success, the more recent Pura 80 series faced a tougher market. Sales data shows the Pura 80 sold 1.8 million units in its first 120 days, only 40% of its predecessor's sales in the same period. This was attributed to two main factors: it launched with HarmonyOS 5.0, an early version of the native OS that still had gaps in app availability and functionality, and its pricing was considered high, especially between the Pro and Pro+ models which had similar hardware. It seems Huawei has learned from this. The HarmonyOS app ecosystem has since matured significantly, with key apps like WeChat now offering features on par with their Android counterparts. Furthermore, Huawei strategically reserved its biggest upgrades—the new Kirin 9030, HarmonyOS 6, and eSIM support—for the Mate 80, positioning it as a far more complete and compelling flagship.

Late to the Party: Is the Mate 80 Worth the Wait?

The smartphone market's accelerated pace this year means the Mate 80 is arriving late. The iPhone 17 and Xiaomi 17 series launched in September, capturing the lucrative year-end sales window and quickly racking up millions of activations. With other major brands also having released their flagships, the market is already saturated. The Mate 80's late launch means it will miss the peak of major shopping festivals like "Double 11," putting it at a competitive disadvantage. Despite these challenges, the Huawei Mate series commands a loyal following. The Mate 80 is shaping up to be the "complete form" of the last two generations, offering comprehensive upgrades in performance, imaging, and battery life, all powered by the most mature version of native HarmonyOS to date. If Huawei can get the pricing right, the Mate 80 has a strong chance of overcoming its late start to become a year-end champion.
