Sony Confirms Development of PS6, Expected to Launch Around 2028

On June 24th, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) CEO Hideaki Nishino officially confirmed that the development of the PlayStation 6 (PS6) gaming console has begun. The PS6 project is now a "core priority" for the company, although the exact release date is still to be determined.

The current PlayStation 5 (PS5) console, which was launched in 2020, is still in the middle of its product life cycle. To date, it has sold over 65 million units worldwide. However, with the market gradually becoming saturated, a slowdown in sales growth is anticipated. This has prompted Sony to accelerate the development of the next-generation console.

Currently, there are no specific details available regarding the hardware specifications of the PS6. In an interview, Nishino emphasized that the PS6 will continue to support local hardware operation. This decision is based on the fact that "Sony cannot fully control the end-to-end network connection quality on the user's side." Therefore, the PS6 will remain focused on "locally running games."

While the official release date for the PS6 has not been announced, according to court documents related to the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard acquisition case, Sony hinted that the next-generation console is expected to be launched around 2028.
