Apple and Meta Discuss AI Collaboration For iPhones, Says “WSJ”

Apple and Meta AI Partnership

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has held discussions with Apple about integrating Meta Platforms' generative AI model into Apple Intelligence, its recently announced AI system for iPhones and other devices. The Wall Street Journal wrote this today based on statements from insiders.

As a latecomer to generative AI, Apple has developed its own smaller artificial intelligence models, but for more complex or specific tasks it will rely on partners. When Apple Intelligence was unveiled earlier this month at the Worldwide Developers Conference, OpenAI's ChatGPT was announced as the company's first partner.

In addition to Meta, AI startups Anthropic and Perplexity are also in talks with Apple to bring their generative AI to Apple Intelligence, people familiar with the talks told the business newspaper. Apple would also be interested in a collaboration with Google.

Meta and other companies developing generative artificial intelligence hope to benefit from Apple's massive distribution through its iPhones.

Should a partnership come to fruition, the AI companies would sell premium subscriptions to their services through Apple Intelligence. Just like in its app store, the iPhone maker receives a share of the revenue.

The talks have not yet been completed and could still fail. While deals with Apple would help the AI companies gain large-scale distribution of their products, it is unclear how big the financial windfall would be.

As Apple makes deals with partners outside of OpenAI, customers can choose which external AI models they want to use in addition to Apple's internal systems.
