Dell Unveils Pro Max 16 Plus: The First Mobile Workstation with an Enterprise-Grade Dedicated NPU

Dell has officially announced the launch of its new Pro Max 16 Plus workstation, a pioneering mobile device designed for local AI inference. This machine marks a significant step forward by being the first mobile workstation equipped with a dedicated, enterprise-grade Neural Processing Unit (NPU) from Qualcomm.

Interestingly, the initial release of the Pro Max 16 Plus will ship with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, which Dell has officially verified for the system. Customers looking for a Windows-based version will have to wait, as models pre-installed with Windows 11 are not expected to be available until early 2026. For context, current Windows 11 models sold on Dell's website feature NVIDIA GeForce RTX dedicated graphics but do not include the new Qualcomm NPU.

The standout feature of this workstation is the Qualcomm AI 100 PC Inference Card. This enterprise-focused component features a dual AI-100 NPU architecture and comes with 64GB of dedicated AI memory. This powerful hardware enables the device to deliver sustained, high-precision FP16 inference performance and run large language models with up to approximately 120 billion parameters directly on the laptop.

By performing inference tasks locally, the Pro Max 16 Plus significantly reduces its reliance on cloud connectivity. This on-device processing ensures that sensitive data remains entirely within the machine, a crucial requirement for sectors such as healthcare, finance, and government. Furthermore, this approach enhances response speeds and helps lower the costs associated with cloud-based AI processing.

Dell highlighted several practical applications for this on-device AI capability. These include real-time analysis of medical images in environments with limited internet access, secure fraud detection and automated document classification, and local performance evaluation of large models during engineering research and development.

Compared to the integrated NPUs found in many laptops, this dedicated NPU offers superior performance and has its own memory, allowing it to handle much larger and more complex models. When compared to a GPU, it provides better energy efficiency and stability for sustained inference tasks. Supporting this hardware, Qualcomm's AI 100 Linux drivers have been merged into the mainline Linux kernel, and Dell advises users to keep the firmware updated to benefit from important performance and power optimizations.
