Insta360's Modular Pocket Gimbal Camera Prototype with Leica Lens Leaked

On January 20th, tech media outlet thenewcamera released a set of images reportedly taken in a lab environment, showcasing a prototype of an Insta360 pocket gimbal camera. The images clearly reveal a modular architecture, where the lens module, display screen, and battery grip can all be independently detached and reconfigured, signaling a new direction for portable cameras.

According to the leaked prototype images, Insta360 is developing a "dual-lens module" system in parallel, presenting two distinct forms. One features a lens with a three-axis mechanical gimbal, sharing a design language similar to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. The other is a larger, standalone lens module without a mechanical gimbal, offering a different shooting experience.

The latter, non-gimbal module appears to house a larger sensor (speculated to be one-inch) and is equipped with a Leica Super-Elmar 1:2.8/21 lens. Its overall form factor is closer to that of a portable compact camera, specifically designed for snapshots or fixed-position shooting scenarios where mechanical stabilization is not required.

The report highlights that the prototype operates on a "universal core" logic. This innovative design allows users to detach the core module—containing the sensor and Leica lens—from the "compact camera form" and directly attach it to the "gimbal handle" via an interface, instantly gaining mechanical stabilization capabilities.

This unique modularity means creators could seamlessly switch between an "ultra-portable" workflow and a "professionally stabilized" one with just a single set of equipment. This is a level of versatility not currently offered by competing product lines from manufacturers like DJI, potentially giving Insta360 a significant market advantage.

Based on the prototype and patent information, the media outlet predicts a potential release date for the camera in the second or third quarter of 2026. In terms of performance, the new device is expected to inherit technology from the Insta360 X5, likely supporting 8K 30fps panoramic or 4K 60fps standard video recording, along with features such as Active HDR and AI tracking.
