Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5: Qualcomm’s Next Flagship Chip Rumored

New whispers from the tech world suggest Qualcomm is getting ready to shake up its naming game. According to a leak from a trusted Weibo blogger, the upcoming SM8850 chipset may debut as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

So, why does that matter? Until now, Qualcomm’s flagship phone chip was the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 (SM8750). By adding “Elite” to the SM8850, Qualcomm is clearly hinting at something bigger—literally and figuratively. Think of it as a new “ultra-premium” tier sitting above the standard flagship.

This move also connects the dots with Qualcomm’s PC lineup. The company recently launched its Snapdragon X Elite chips for laptops. Extending the “Elite” label to mobile suggests a unified branding strategy across phones and PCs—likely centered around the Oryon CPU cores that Qualcomm has been building from the ground up.

Both the Gen 4 and Gen 5 Elite are rumored to use these custom cores, moving away from standard ARM designs. That’s a huge shift. The Elite version is expected to push performance even further—some speculate it’s a “big core” upgrade of the Gen 4 with more muscle for demanding tasks.

If the rumors hold true, the arrival of an “Elite” tier could reshape how we think about smartphone categories. Instead of just “flagship” phones, we might start seeing flagship vs. ultra-premium models, giving phone makers—and us—a new performance level to play with.
