Raspberry Pi Unveils Its First-Ever Official Flash Drive with a Focus on Performance and Reliability

Raspberry Pi has officially entered the storage market with the announcement of its first-party flash drive, aptly named the Raspberry Pi Flash Drive. This new product is designed to offer a robust and high-performance storage solution tailored for its ecosystem and general consumers.

The Raspberry Pi Flash Drive boasts a sleek and durable all-aluminum casing, ensuring it can handle the rigors of daily use. It connects via a USB-A 5Gbps interface and is available in two capacities to suit different needs: a 128GB model priced at $30 and a larger 256GB model available for $55.

Under the hood, the drive utilizes QLC flash memory enhanced with SLC Cache technology. This configuration allows for impressive burst speeds, with instantaneous sequential writes that can nearly saturate the 5Gbps interface. For sustained performance, the out-of-cache direct write speeds are rated at 75MB/s for the 128GB version and a solid 150MB/s for the 256GB version.

The drive also delivers strong random I/O performance. The 128GB model achieves 4K random read and write speeds of 16K IOPS and 21K IOPS, respectively. The 256GB model offers a slight boost, with 18K IOPS for random reads and 22K IOPS for random writes, making it suitable for more demanding tasks.

 

 

A standout feature is the drive's emphasis on reliability. According to Raspberry Pi, it has been rigorously tested for unexpected power loss and can withstand tens of thousands of random power-off cycles while under intense I/O workloads. Additionally, the drive supports modern storage management features, including SMART for health monitoring and TRIM to maintain optimal performance over its lifespan.
