The Off-Road Robot Vacuum: A Hands-On Look at the Roborock G30S Pro and its 8.8cm Obstacle-Climbing Power

On January 20th, Roborock officially launched its new self-cleaning robot vacuum, the G30S Pro. This new model introduces groundbreaking features like Chassis Lifting 3.0 and an innovative AI Wheel-Leg system, enabling it to conquer obstacles up to 8.8cm high. It effortlessly navigates over sliding door tracks and steps, setting a new standard for robotic cleaners.

As the latest iteration in Roborock's G series, the G30S Pro maintains the brand's signature minimalist design while pushing the boundaries of slimness. A key design highlight is the retractable LDS LiDAR on top. In its normal state, the LiDAR is raised for mapping and navigation. However, when it detects low-hanging furniture like beds or sofas, the module automatically retracts into the body, allowing the robot to pass through spaces as low as 7.95cm.

To maintain navigational accuracy with the LiDAR retracted, the G30S Pro is equipped with a 110° rear-view sensor that works in tandem with other sensors around the body, ensuring precise positioning and path planning even in confined, low-clearance spaces. The front of the unit integrates an RGB camera and a structured light module to identify ground obstacles and stains. This advanced vision system can recognize water, oil, and other spills, automatically adjusting its cleaning strategy, such as lifting the main brush when encountering liquids.

The most significant innovation is visible on the underside: the wheel assembly. The G30S Pro features the Chassis Lifting 3.0 system with independent support arms on the drive wheels. When facing a high threshold or complex obstacle, these arms act like a pole vault, lifting the wheels over the barrier. The chassis itself can rise by 4.5cm, and the support arms provide an additional 4.3cm lift, achieving a total obstacle clearance of 8.8cm. This mechanical breakthrough also allows the entire chassis to lift 20mm when detecting medium to long-pile carpets, preventing the mop from causing secondary contamination.

In terms of cleaning components, the G30S Pro emphasizes anti-tangle performance and immense suction power. It uses a zero-tangle dual-arm counter-rotating brush system with two V-shaped rubber-bristle rollers. Combined with a staggering 35,000Pa of suction, a differential gearbox helps tear and pull hair directly into the dustbin. The side brush also features a mechanical arm that extends automatically to clean deep into corners. For mopping, the signature Roborock vibrating mop pad now includes a retractable design. When it detects walls or furniture edges, the entire mop plate extends outwards to achieve edge cleaning with a gap of less than 1mm, supported by 14N of downward pressure and 4000 vibrations per minute.

The accompanying all-in-one docking station handles auto-dust collection, water refilling, mop washing, and drying. Its core upgrade is the 100°C dynamic hot water mop washing, which effectively dissolves grease and oil stains. After cleaning, the station uses hot air to dry both the mop and the cleaning tray. A new 55°C hot air drying function for the dust bag area prevents moisture and mildew growth. The obstacle avoidance system has also been upgraded to a tri-line laser system, adding a horizontal scan line for a wider field of view to accurately identify over 280 types of objects. A new diagonal laser allows it to observe walls at a height of 2-8cm, enabling smoother and more precise wall-following with fewer bumps and missed spots.

In conclusion, the Roborock G30S Pro is a significant leap forward in robotic cleaning technology. Its unparalleled 8.8cm obstacle clearance, combined with intelligent features like the retractable LiDAR, extendable mop for true edge-to-edge cleaning, and a highly effective hot-water self-cleaning dock, firmly establishes it as a new benchmark for what a flagship robot vacuum can achieve.
