2025 Flagship Smartphone Chip Battle: Qualcomm's 5th Gen Snapdragon 8 Supreme vs. MediaTek Dimensity 9500

The tech world is buzzing with the release of two powerhouse chips for 2025's flagship Android smartphones: Qualcomm's 5th Gen Snapdragon 8 Supreme and MediaTek's Dimensity 9500. Both chips are set to compete fiercely in terms of performance, efficiency, and AI capabilities, as reported by Android Headline on September 25th.

Architecture and Performance

Both chips are built on TSMC's 3nm N3P process technology. Qualcomm's 5th Gen Snapdragon 8 Supreme features a custom Oryon CPU architecture with two Prime cores clocked at 4.6 GHz and six performance cores clocked at 3.62 GHz. The GPU is the latest Adreno model, offering a 23% performance boost and a 20% reduction in power consumption.

On the other hand, MediaTek's Dimensity 9500 uses Arm's public architecture, including one C1-Ultra core, three C1-Premium cores, and four C1-Pro cores. Its Mali-G1 Ultra GPU boasts a 33% increase in peak performance and a staggering 119% improvement in ray tracing performance.

Connectivity

In terms of 5G, Qualcomm's X85 modem supports peak download speeds of 12.5Gbps, while MediaTek's Dimensity 9500 reaches 7.4Gbps. However, the Dimensity 9500 has a higher Wi-Fi 7 peak speed at 7.3Gbps compared to Qualcomm's 5.8Gbps.

Imaging and AI

Both chips support 320MP photography and 8K video recording. Qualcomm's platform excels in AI-ISP and multi-frame processing, while MediaTek's Dimensity 9500 focuses on video stabilization and enhanced cinema mode.

In AI, Qualcomm's Hexagon NPU offers a 16% improvement in energy efficiency and supports on-device generative AI and multimodal models. MediaTek's NPU 990 is designed for agentic AI and low-power inference.

Power Management

Qualcomm employs 5G PowerSave technology, while MediaTek's UltraSave solution aims to optimize power consumption for both chips.

Market Availability

These chips will be featured in flagship devices from brands like Honor, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, Samsung, and Xiaomi. Qualcomm's 5th Gen Snapdragon 8 Supreme is expected to debut in devices this month, while MediaTek's Dimensity 9500 will be first seen in OPPO's Find X9 series and a new vivo device, with the Find X9 series set to launch next month.
