HeyWhatsNew: Automatic Emergency Braking Is Becoming More Reliable, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite May Be the Next Big Chipset
Welcome to this week’s edition of HeyWhat’sNew! We’re diving into the latest developments in technology, entertainment, and trends shaping our world. From groundbreaking innovations in AI to exciting new gadgets hitting the market, let’s explore what’s trending in the week beginning 21/10/2024.
Tesla Used Movie Footage Without Permission, Now They’re Being Sued
Alcon Entertainment, the studio responsible for the 2017 Blade Runner 2049 movie, is suing Elon Musk and Tesla for using imagery from the film during the unveiling of Tesla’s Robotaxi. It’s alleged that Tesla was denied permission to use the footage, yet the company proceeded with it regardless, sparking the legal action.
This lawsuit adds to growing tensions, as it follows last week's report that Musk's new robot may have drawn inspiration from another sci-fi classic, the 2004 film I, Robot. IGN.com reports that these incidents are fueling speculation about Tesla’s creative direction, and its potential reliance on Hollywood-inspired designs.
iOS 18.2 Beta Is Out, and It Lets You AI Generate Your Own Emojis with Genmoji
It’s been confirmed that Apple’s iOS 18.1 will be available to all eligible users by the end of next week, however, that hasn’t stopped the company from working on the next best software in the meantime. In fact, according to a report on TechRadar, the iOS 18.2 developer beta is almost ready for testing.
Official reports suggest that AI focused features will be the highlight of the new operating system. Genmoji, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, and ChatGPT integration for Siri will be appearing for the first time in the iOS 18.2 developer beta
The AAA Finds That Automatic Emergency Braking Has Significantly Improved Over the Years
Advancements in sensor technology, including the number of sensors and the improved fusion of cameras, radar, and other systems, have significantly enhanced vehicle safety features. The AAA found that Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems in older models avoided collisions only 51% of the time, while the AEB systems in 2024 model vehicles successfully prevented collisions 100% of the time, regardless of speed.
However, with the Federal Highway Administration reporting that the majority of total miles driven in the U.S. are at speeds above 35 mph, the AAA also conducted tests to assess how modern AEB systems perform at higher speeds, which is critical for real-world safety. Test results show that at speeds higher than 55mph, advanced AEB systems were still deficient in preventing accidents.
Apple Confirms That M4 MacBook Air Production Will Begin Soon
On Thursday, Apple announced that the world should expect a week of big announcements starting on Monday morning. According to Bloomberg, the announcement comes as Apple is getting ready to start producing an updated line of MacBook Airs that feature the M4 chip. If all goes according to plan, the M4 MacBook Air line will be released after a December software update, so we should expect to see it between January and March next year.
Experts expect that the week long announcement planned by Apple will highlight all the AI capabilities of the M4 chip
Qualcomm Announces the Snapdragon 8 Elite Chipset with a Performance That’s Better Than Apple’s A18 Chip
Prior to this week’s announcement from Qualcomm, Apple’s A18 chip stood as one of the most powerful chipsets in the smartphone industry, powering the latest iPhone 16 Pro models. Well, following Qualcomm’s reveal of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, this has reportedly changed. According to FoneArena, the new chipset sits at the top of the AnTuTu 10 Benchmark with over 3 million points.
It’s also reported that while Apple’s chip scores better on Geekbench 6 Single-Core, the Snapdragon 8 Elite tops the Geekbench 6 Multi-Core CPU scores. Qualcomm and other companies have announced that devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite will begin to launch, starting with the Xiaomi 15 series. This will be followed by the iQOO 13 and the OnePlus 13 in the coming days.
