Dutch Designer Builds Incredible 10:1 Scale LEGO Computer Powered by a Mac Mini

A Dutch designer has masterfully blended nostalgia with modern technology, creating a fully functional, 10:1 scale replica of the classic wedge-shaped LEGO computer brick. This impressive creation is more than just a model; it's a complete computer workstation powered by an Apple Mac Mini.

The project, dubbed the M2x2, was brought to life by Paul Staal of Watt IV. Inside the giant, 3D-printed brick is a powerful Mac mini, a 7-inch IPS display, and a host of peripherals. Staal shared his entire creative process, noting that the case was constructed with about $20 worth of PLA filament on a personal 3D printer.

Interestingly, the original LEGO computer brick (part number 3039p23) was released in 1979, predating the first Apple Macintosh by five years. Staal’s M2x2 workstation cleverly merges the 70s-inspired LEGO design with Apple's modern aesthetic. He admitted that fitting all the components into a shape faithful to the original brick was a significant challenge, which he meticulously overcame using Fusion 360 software.

The design's brilliance shines through in its interactive features. The two iconic LEGO studs on top are fully functional. One is a rotary knob for controlling media, such as adjusting volume or skipping tracks. The other stud integrates a wireless charger, capable of powering an Apple Watch or AirPods.

Thoughtful details abound, such as a groove on the back that serves as a handle—a tribute to the original Mac—and foldable 'wings' that neatly manage the power cord. In his daily setup, Staal uses the M2x2 with a larger LG DualUp monitor, while the built-in 7-inch touchscreen serves as a convenient smart home control panel. The front-facing ports also provide quick access for charging devices like a keyboard or phone.
