Leaked Identifiers Hint at Apple Testing New Mac Mini with M5 and M5 Pro Chips

According to a recent report from AppleInsider, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter, Apple is currently in the process of testing two new Mac devices. These devices are identified internally by the codes J873s and J873g, sparking speculation about the next generation of Apple's compact desktop computer.

The key to this speculation lies in Apple's existing product identifiers. The current M4-powered Mac mini is known as J773s, while its more powerful M4 Pro counterpart is J773g. Following this pattern, the newly spotted J873s and J873g identifiers almost certainly correspond to the upcoming M5 and M5 Pro versions of the Mac mini, respectively.

For those hoping for a new look, it's anticipated that the M5 generation Mac mini will not feature significant design changes. Apple introduced a comprehensive overhaul with the M4 models, which included a substantial reduction in external dimensions. Therefore, the upcoming release is expected to be a generational upgrade focused primarily on the new System on a Chip (SoC), rather than a redesign of the chassis.

On the software front, the report also sheds light on Apple's internal development. The company is said to be testing macOS 26.1 and 26.4, as well as the next major release, macOS 27. In parallel, development for iOS 26.4 is also reportedly underway, indicating progress across Apple's software ecosystem.

The  leaked identifiers provide strong evidence that Apple is actively developing the next iteration of the Mac mini. Consumers can likely expect a significant performance boost with the introduction of the M5 and M5 Pro chips, all while retaining the compact and modern design introduced with the M4 generation. The focus is clearly on internal power rather than external changes for this upcoming cycle.
