Meta’s $299 AI Glasses Want You to Buy Them Like Sunglasses

What Meta is really trying to reshape is not just smart glasses. It is sunglasses.

On June 23, Meta introduced three smart glasses under its own brand: Adventurer, Fury, and Starfire, a Kylie Jenner collaboration.

The first two models are priced at $299. The Starfire edition is priced at $399.

That is cheaper than the second-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and significantly lower than the Ray-Ban Meta Optics released earlier this year. More importantly, this is the first time Meta is selling smart glasses directly under its own name, instead of relying on Ray-Ban or Oakley branding.

So here is the real question: could a $299 pair of Meta AI glasses become a young consumer’s first pair of AI glasses?

Cheaper, and Easier to Use

The three new Meta AI glasses are still developed with EssilorLuxottica, the eyewear giant behind Ray-Ban and Oakley. But this time, Meta appears to believe its own brand may carry more appeal than using one of EssilorLuxottica’s lower-tier eyewear labels.

The new models reportedly debut with Muse Spark, Meta’s latest multimodal AI model from its superintelligence lab. Older Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses are also expected to receive the model through future OTA updates.

In other words, these cheaper Meta-branded glasses may actually get the newest AI capabilities first.

The hardware is also competitive: a 12MP camera, 3K video recording, a six-microphone array, more than eight hours of battery life, and a charging case that can provide up to 40 additional hours. The foldable case is also designed to fit more easily into a pocket or bag.

A new feature called Dynamic Photo can capture multiple frames when the user presses the shutter, then recommend the best shot.

With Meta’s newer multimodal model, the glasses are also expected to support turn-by-turn voice navigation for walking. For a pair of glasses without a display, this is a practical design choice: the user does not need to look at a screen, but can still receive step-by-step navigation.

Real-time translation for 20 languages is also reportedly on the way, including Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin. According to early hands-on feedback cited by the Verge, Mandarin translation appears to perform reasonably well.

The three models also cover different styles. Adventurer uses a classic square frame. Fury has a bolder, more rugged look. Starfire, the Kylie Jenner edition, uses a slim oval frame with a small jewel detail on the lens and metal nose pads designed to avoid picking up makeup.

Meta is also offering multiple color and lens combinations, including transparent, polarized, and transition lenses.

Several eyewear details are worth noting. The nose pads support three width settings. The temple tips include a metal core that can be adjusted inward or outward to better fit different face shapes. The hinges are designed to open wider for users with larger heads. Prescription lenses are also supported.

These are not small details. They reflect EssilorLuxottica’s decades of eyewear manufacturing experience. Meta is not only building an AI device; it is leaning on one of the world’s strongest eyewear supply chains and retail networks.

Compared with earlier Meta co-branded glasses, the new Meta-branded models are cheaper, more flexible, and easier to understand.

What Meta Is Really Changing Is Sunglasses

Does this feel unfair to earlier buyers?

Not necessarily. Many people who paid more for Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta glasses were also buying into those brands. And many of the new AI features should still arrive on older models through software updates.

The bigger point is this: over the past few years, Meta’s smart glasses strategy has been trying to solve one core problem.

How do you make people willing to wear an electronic device on their face?

The Ray-Ban partnership solved the “smart glasses look awkward” problem by using a classic frame design. The Oakley partnership gave the product a sports lifestyle reason to exist.

The logic was simple: use a trusted fashion or lifestyle brand first, then let users accept the intelligence later.

That strategy worked. Meta has said smart glasses sales tripled last year, and cumulative sales have reportedly reached 9 million pairs.

But 9 million pairs of smart glasses is still small compared with the smartphone market. Global smartphone shipments exceed 1 billion units a year. The number of people willing to spend $400 or $500 on Ray-Ban or Oakley smart glasses is still limited.

Premium eyewear branding can answer one question: will some people buy this?

It does not fully answer another question: can most people afford it?

This is where Meta’s $299 price becomes important. It brings AI glasses much closer to the price range of regular branded sunglasses.

Think about the last time you bought sunglasses. A decent pair from Ray-Ban or Oakley can easily cost $150 to $300. Sunglasses are not cheap, and they are not all-day devices. You probably would not wear them in an office meeting.

But most people still own at least one pair. When the moment is right, they are willing to wear sunglasses outside.

So if a pair of $299 sunglasses can also take photos, play music, support AI, and offer translation or navigation, the value equation changes.

There is a subtle psychological shift here.

If someone spends more money on Ray-Ban Meta glasses, they may still think: I bought a smart device. Naturally, they will judge it by tech standards. Is the AI smart enough? Is the camera clear enough? Is the battery long enough?

But if someone spends roughly the price of a good pair of sunglasses, the smart features start to feel like added value.

That added value may be what Meta is really selling.

At this price point, Meta is not just targeting the smart glasses category. It is aiming at the much larger sunglasses category.

Many people already carry sunglasses that cost hundreds of dollars. They may not care deeply about AI. They care whether the glasses look good, feel light, and are reasonably priced.

If smart glasses can match regular sunglasses on those basics, while offering extra features, the choice becomes much easier.

Meta is not the only company seeing this opportunity.

Xreal recently launched xbx, a sub-brand aimed at younger consumers. Its first product, the xbx a01 series, starts at  $299 USD.

The product is interesting because it is also shaped like sunglasses.

The front frame can be removed and swapped between different styles, including classic, sport, and dark-lens options. Xreal has even opened 3D printing parameters so users can design their own front frames.

The standard version weighs 62 grams, and only 56 grams without the front frame.

It also offers a basic AR display experience, with a built-in screen that reportedly reaches 1,600 nits peak brightness, supports 120Hz refresh rate, and HDR10. Because sunglasses naturally block light, the form factor may actually help the display experience.

Xreal’s strategy is clear: design, lightness, and youth appeal come first. The display function comes second.

If you buy it mainly for AR display, you may feel it is not enough. But if you buy it as a good-looking pair of sunglasses, the display becomes a pleasant bonus.

Meta’s $299 AI glasses and Xreal’s xbx01  use very different technologies. One focuses on AI. The other focuses on AR.

But their market approach is surprisingly similar: make a better pair of sunglasses, then turn smart functions into added value.

Mark Zuckerberg once predicted that in a few years, it would be hard to imagine most glasses not being AI glasses. At the time, he did not explain much further.

These new Meta AI glasses may be his answer.

Smart glasses may not be a replacement for glasses.

They may simply become glasses.
