HeyWhatsNew: iPhone 17 Launch Set and YouTube’s AI Video Tweaks Stir Creators

Another week, another wave of breaking news in tech, gaming, startups, and innovation. Welcome back, Heyuppers! Here’s what’s been making the rounds for the week starting 25/08.

Framework’s Laptop Just Got a Game-Changing Upgrade

Framework is making modular laptops even more exciting. The new Framework Laptop 16, launching this November, finally brings an upgradable Nvidia RTX 5070 GPU—something fans have been dreaming about. That means gamers can boost their graphics without buying a whole new machine. The RTX 5070 promises 30–40% better framerates, quieter performance, and USB-C display output. It works with the original Framework Laptop 16, so anyone can upgrade and feel like they’ve got a brand-new laptop. Preorders start at $1,499, with shipments rolling out in November.

There’s plenty more to love. The updated Laptop 16 now comes with AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series CPUs, supports up to 96GB RAM and 10TB storage, has a stronger USB-C charger, G-Sync for its 165Hz display, and a fresh keyboard and webcam. Most of these upgrades are backward compatible, keeping the modular, repairable vibe Framework is known for. It’s been a big year for the company, with new laptops and even a tiny desktop hitting the scene.

Apple Announces iPhone 17 Event

Apple is getting ready for its big September 9 event, and all eyes are on the iPhone 17 and new Apple Watches. The company’s invite teased the tagline “Awe dropping,” keeping details under wraps like always. Fans and investors are eager to see not just fresh designs but also whether Apple can keep pushing the envelope, especially as AI starts playing a bigger role in tech. Rumors hint at a super slim “MacBook Air–style” iPhone, a move to shake up the look of smartphones that haven’t changed much in years.

Besides the sleek new model, Apple is expected to launch standard and Pro versions with improved processors, cameras, and battery life. The Pro models could come with titanium builds and bigger screens while the company deals with tariffs and production shifts to India. With iPhone sales still a huge part of its business, this September event is more than just a product launch. It is a chance for Apple to show it is still ahead of the game.

Mitti Labs Uses AI and Partnerships to Cut Methane from Rice Farming

Mitti Labs, a New York–based startup, is tackling climate change by helping rice farmers reduce methane emissions, a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO₂. The company uses AI-powered models fed by satellite and radar data to monitor rice paddies and train farmers in climate-friendly practices. By partnering with organizations like The Nature Conservancy, Mitti can scale its approach across India, reaching smallholder farmers who otherwise wouldn’t have access to these tools.

The startup also offers a software-as-a-service model, letting other project developers track and verify methane reductions while generating carbon credits. Farmers see real benefits too, often earning about 15% more by participating in Mitti’s programs. With flooded rice fields producing significant methane worldwide, Mitti’s mix of tech, partnerships, and hands-on farmer support is helping cut emissions and make sustainable farming practical for millions.

YouTube Secretly Tweaks Videos Using AI, Leaving Creators Uneasy

YouTube has quietly started using AI to enhance videos on its Shorts platform, and some creators are noticing the changes. Popular YouTubers like Rick Beato and Rhett Shull spotted subtle edits in their content, from sharper skin to slightly warped features, which made their videos feel different from what they originally posted. Beato even said he almost thought he was wearing makeup, and Shull worried it could affect the trust he has with his audience. YouTube confirmed it is experimenting with AI to unblur, denoise, and improve clarity, but it has not clarified whether creators will have the option to opt out. Unlike smartphones, which let users choose how AI enhances images or videos, YouTube’s approach alters content without creators’ consent. Experts warn this could slowly erode our sense of reality and authenticity online. For creators and viewers alike, it raises important questions about trust, authenticity, and how much of what we watch is really real.

Hollow Knight Silksong Forces Other Games to Hit Pause

The excitement for Hollow Knight: Silksong is so intense that several developers are delaying their own games just to avoid being overshadowed. With the release set for September 4 and the original Hollow Knight having sold over 15 million copies, indie developers especially feel the pressure. Titles like Aeterna Lucis, Faeland, and CloverPit have all pushed back their launch dates, saying Silksong’s announcement made it clear that releasing alongside such a highly anticipated game would hurt their chances of getting noticed.

Instead of frustration, many devs are showing gratitude. The team behind Aeterna Lucis called Silksong an inspiration, crediting it with keeping the metroidvania genre alive and sparking their own creativity. The delays are about giving each game its moment to shine, not competing. When Silksong finally drops, it looks like a lot of gamers—and developers—will be taking a few days just to play it.

Google Translate Adds AI-Powered Language Learning Tools

Google Translate is getting a major upgrade with new AI-powered features designed to help users practice and learn languages. The new “practice” feature adapts to a user’s skill level and goals, offering tailored listening and speaking exercises. Beginners can build conversational skills, while advanced speakers can brush up on vocabulary. The beta is rolling out for Android and iOS, initially supporting English speakers learning Spanish and French, and Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers learning English.

In addition, Google Translate is improving live conversation capabilities. Users can now have real-time audio conversations with on-screen translations in over 70 languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil. The app translates both sides of the conversation and provides transcripts, making it easier to communicate across language barriers. Google credits AI and its Gemini models for these advances, which improve translation quality, speed, and text-to-speech features.
