Apple Closes iOS/iPadOS 26 Verification Channel: No Downgrades for iPhone 17 Series After Upgrading to 26.0.1

On October 7th, Apple officially closed the iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 verification channels, including iOS 18.7. This means that users who have upgraded to iOS/iPadOS 26.0.1 will no longer be able to downgrade to previous versions through official channels.

What is Firmware Signing?

Firmware signing is a crucial part of Apple's security protocol. When a user attempts to install a specific iOS version, the device sends a request to Apple’s servers, which verify the firmware through a digital signature to ensure it is legitimate. Once Apple stops signing a version, the servers will reject installation attempts for that version, effectively preventing users from downgrading or installing unauthorized software.

Impact of Apple’s Move

With the closure of the iOS/iPadOS 26 verification channel, users who have upgraded to iOS 26.0.1 or iPadOS 26.0.1 will no longer be able to revert to older versions. Additionally, Apple has stopped signing iOS 18.7, which means those on this version will be unable to upgrade to newer versions if they wish to stay on iOS 18.7.

While security updates will still be available for iOS 18.7 users, this move emphasizes Apple's commitment to maintaining a secure ecosystem. It ensures that users are always running verified and up-to-date software, which is critical for device security and performance.
