Beyond the Screen: Is Apple Planning a Radically Different Wearable?

Apple Watch is still one of the best smartwatches you can buy. It is also starting to feel predictable.

For longtime users, the annual upgrade cycle has become familiar: a brighter display, thinner bezels, a faster chip, a new health metric, and a few software features that may or may not become part of daily life. Each update is useful on its own. Taken together, they raise a harder question: has Apple Watch become too much like a tiny iPhone on the wrist?

That question now matters because Apple may finally be thinking beyond the watch shape itself. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported that Apple’s industrial design team has been re-evaluating the Apple Watch lineup, including ideas such as screen-free wearables, smart rings, new display shapes and sizes, cheaper entry models, and even higher-end versions above Ultra.

The 2026 Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are still expected to be more conventional updates, with faster performance and possible material changes rather than a radical redesign. But the bigger signal is clear: Apple seems to understand that making the same wrist screen slightly better every year may not be enough to reach the next group of health users.

Some people want health tracking, not another screen

Apple Watch remains powerful because it combines health, fitness, communication, payments, navigation, and notifications in one device. But that strength is also its limitation.

Not everyone wants a screen on the wrist. Some people already wear mechanical watches. Some do not want notifications touching their body all day. Some only care about sleep, recovery, heart rate, and long-term health trends, not apps or watch faces.

That is why screenless wearables have become more interesting. Oura, Whoop, and similar devices do less on purpose. They remove the screen, reduce interaction, extend battery life, and focus on passive tracking. The device becomes something you wear in the background instead of another gadget asking for attention.

These categories are not replacing Apple Watch today. Their scale is still much smaller. But they prove that many people want health and context without the full smartwatch experience.

The screen is useful, but it creates friction

The Apple Watch screen made sense in 2015. Apple wanted a way to show notifications, messages, contacts, workouts, and glanceable information on the wrist. The square display, Digital Crown, app grid, and complications all grew around that idea.

But health tracking has a different rhythm. For all-day monitoring, the best device is often the one you forget you are wearing.

That is where Apple Watch still struggles. Apple wants users to wear it overnight for sleep, wrist temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and other vitals. But night is also when many people charge their devices. The result is an awkward routine: charge during a shower, charge while brushing teeth, charge before bed, then hope there is enough battery left for sleep tracking.

Compared with lightweight bands or rings that last several days, Apple Watch can feel like a health device that needs too much care from the person it is supposed to help.

Apple has the data. It needs a better interpreter.

Apple’s Health app already stores a huge amount of information from iPhone, Apple Watch, compatible apps, and connected devices. Apple says users can view highlights, trends, heart metrics, sleep data, wrist temperature, vitals, and more. It also emphasizes privacy, scientific validation, and user control.

The issue is not data collection. It is interpretation.

If your resting heart rate is higher than usual, your HRV is down, and your sleep was fragmented, what should you do today? Rest? Walk? Train lightly? Skip caffeine? Apple Health can show the numbers, but it often stops short of giving plain-language guidance.

Competitors have moved faster here. Oura turns multiple signals into readiness, sleep, and activity scores. Whoop gives recovery-style feedback. Third-party AI tools can already read Apple Health data and explain patterns conversationally.

That is the missing layer for Apple: not more charts, but clearer answers.

When the screen disappears, AI becomes the interface

A screen-free Apple health device would force a major interaction shift. Without a display, users cannot tap apps, swipe cards, or inspect charts on the device itself. The system has to move from “user checks data” to “system explains what matters.”

That is where AI becomes the real interface.

Bloomberg has reported that Apple scaled back plans for a standalone AI health coach, code-named Mulberry, and now plans to bring some of those features into the Health app over time. Apple job listings also point to work on generative AI, LLM agents, and health experiences that integrate across Apple’s ecosystem.

This makes sense. A future Apple health system may not depend on one hero device. A screenless band or ring could collect passive body data. AirPods could become a voice interface and possibly add more biometric sensing over time. Smart glasses could understand visual and environmental context. iPhone and on-device AI could connect the signals and explain them in human language.

In that world, the question is no longer whether Apple Watch has the best watch face. The question is whether Apple can turn body data into useful daily advice without making users stare at more graphs.

The next Apple health device should be quieter

Apple does not need to abandon Apple Watch. It still works extremely well for people who want a full smartwatch. But if Apple wants to reach people who never wanted a wrist screen in the first place, it needs a quieter kind of device.

The next breakthrough may not be a round Apple Watch, a bigger Ultra, or a luxury ceramic case. It may be a wearable that fades into the background and lets AI do the explaining.

Twelve years ago, Apple had to answer why anyone needed a screen on the wrist. Now the more interesting question is different: if the screen disappears, can Apple help people understand their bodies better?
