Novodisq’s Novoblade: Revolutionizing Data Storage with 11.5 PB in a 2U Server

New Zealand-based startup, Novodisq, is shaking up the data storage industry with the launch of its game-changing modular storage system: the Novoblade. This innovative system is breaking new ground in data density, cramming an astonishing amount of storage into an ultra-compact 2U blade server.

Unbelievable Storage Capacity

The heart of the Novoblade lies in its custom E2 specification SSDs. Each of these solid-state drives is an absolute powerhouse, offering a jaw-dropping 144 TB of storage. Powered by TLC NAND technology, these drives connect via PCIe Gen4 x4, ensuring lightning-fast data speeds with sequential bandwidth of up to 1000 MB/s. When it comes to random operations, the Novoblade SSDs don’t fall short, boasting up to 70,000 read and 30,000 write IOPS.

And if you’re worried about longevity? These SSDs are built to last, with a lifetime write rating of 24 petabytes—making them ideal for the most demanding storage needs.

Modular Design with Massive Storage

What sets the Novoblade apart is its modular architecture. The system is housed in a 2U blade server, and within this compact form factor, it holds 20 storage modules, each containing four 144 TB SSDs. This allows the Novoblade to achieve a total storage capacity of an incredible 11.5 PB in a single 2U server—a feat that sets a new standard in high-density storage solutions.

Not Just Storage—It’s Also a Compute Powerhouse

But the Novoblade isn’t just about storage. Novodisq has integrated significant computing and acceleration capabilities into this system. Running on standard Linux distributions, it’s highly versatile, with support for software like Docker, KVM, and QEMU, allowing for seamless integration into a variety of workflows.

The system is powered by an AMD Versal G2 SoC, offering robust computational power. For users with even more specialized needs, Novodisq offers customization options, including FPGA hardware, encryption, AI/machine learning acceleration, video encoding, and container orchestration. This makes the Novoblade ideal for cutting-edge tasks like AI inference, data compression, edge analytics, genomics, and edge AI applications.

Price Tag: A Premium Solution

While Novodisq hasn’t officially disclosed the price yet, industry estimates from TechRadar suggest a significant cost. The 144 TB SSDs alone are projected to cost nearly $14,000 each. With 20 modules in the 2U server, the total price for a fully equipped 11.5 PB Novoblade could top a staggering $1.2 million. This positions the Novoblade as a premium storage solution for highly specialized industries requiring massive, fast, and reliable storage—think AI, big data, and high-performance computing.
