    Nostalgia in a box!

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS DEVICE IS IN BETA

Upon receiving the Retro Gaming Box I was quite excited to try it out and dice back into some of my childhood favorites. The packaging seems to be ok but could be enhanced as far as the quality. everything inside was packaged nice and tightly no concerns of anything shifting around.

    QUALITY AND BUILD

The system itself has a good build quality and is pretty sturdy and compact. It will not take up much space where ever you place it since it is only 4 x 4 inches and less than an 1 inch thick It has an HDMI port, Ethernet, AV input jack and a Micro SD Card Slot where you can load more roms. It comes with two PS style controllers that need 2 AAA batteries and function wirelessly this is a huge plus for me.

    PERFORMANCE

The devices works quite well when running NES, GB, GBA, but when it comes to N64 this is where the bottle neck is.

    ISSUES

I feel that the device needs some more processing power and possibly more ram to help out with the N64 emulation. On top fo that when I load the N64 It became rather irritating that the sound was stutering and there was no way to go back on the controller or any indication on the screen as to how to quit that emulator. Other than that the other consoles ran smoothly. The Wi-Fi does not work and I have not been able to figure out how to get it to work. On the next build hopefully these issues get resolved. The controllers are PS style and the build quality is ok, it could be better. The buttons on the…

A really plug & play solution for retro gaming

As a fortunate early beta tester, I can finally share my review of the Heyup Retro Gaming Box! Please consider this is not the final release, so there could be differences.

    [PACKAGING]

It comes in a really nice box, definitely something that deserves to be exposed and not trashed. Inside, it has the minimal but sufficient setup to get started:

2 x Bluetooth Controllers that heavily resemble DualShock 3. They require 2x AAA batteries (not included for me). They are lightweight and feel really good when playing.

A USB Bluetooth receiver for the controller. Once attached, it immediately finds both controllers without extra setup.

A 12V AC adapter. Mine had a UK plug, and unfortunately, as I live in Italy, I had to use another AC adapter from an old modem.

    A full-size HDMI cable.

A micro SD (mine was 32GB) already attached and shipped with a sufficient number of games to start playing.

    [HARDWARE]

The console itself is probably an Android TV box rebranded with a fit-sized firmware on it. It has all the connection ports you may need: an Ethernet plug, a microSD reader, 2x USB ports, a 12V jack for AC power, and surprisingly an AV Output! This AV output may be the killer feature of this box, as this allows an almost direct (with a cheap jack to RCA adapter) connection to your grandmother's CRT TV! However, I only did test PAL output, so I can't guarantee it will work with NTSC, and momentarily there are no entries in the configs that let you change the AV output…

A good gamebox but some improvements needed

The product is a Beta Test so this fact is absolutely to be considered.

The "boxe" is super easy to install, you get the HDMI cable inside the box and you only have to plug it in your TV to make the system appear on the screen.

The box runs on Android and it's very intuitive.

You will have many games already installed on it and you will find them split in categories:

    Arcade

    GameBoy

    GameBoy Advance

    GameBoy Color

    Nintendo 64

    NES

    PS1

    PSP

    SNES

You get 2 controllers that come without batteries (in the final version it could be cool to add them) and an infrared USB to plug in the box to make the controllers usable.

But let's go to the gaming part: unfortunately I could not find a way to change the language of the games and that could be a problem since I don't speak any kind of Asian languages so for the final version I suggest to put the roms inside the SD in the multilanguage version.

You can set the video quality output so you can range from standard definition to ultra quality, the one I chose since I got a 4K TV and, moreover, you can set the screen format.

Some games are lagging and MarioKart64 wasn't usable since the framerate was so slow I couldn't get to run the game.

Moreover, you also get a list of games that are not on the SD and you get the chance to play with other players on your server if you want so that it's a pretty and cool function 😊

Let's come to PROS and CONS!

    PROS:

    Very easy to install

    Intuitive

    European server available

    Lots of games installed on…

    Missing some basic features

I was really excited to have received this, but overall, it was a bit of a letdown.

To start with set up seemed it was going to be dead simple. However, problem number one started with it coming with a US plug on it so I had to go out and buy an adaptor.

Next problem was getting it set up on WiFi. To this day I've still not managed this.

    Next on to the games.

Growing up in the eighties this brought back a bit of nostalgia but I soon noticed something of a delay or mis signal happening when playing some games. For example it really struggles to action a jump on sonic the hedgehog if you are pressing a direction button. This results often in failing to complete a simple level causing frustration. I probably racked up thousands of hours on the original and this was not a problem in early gaming systems.

    Next is the graphics.

It's awful to look at some of the games. They are so blocky it's hard to see what you're doing. The early 8 bit and 16 bit consoles ran smoother and looked more polished than this. I don't know if this is because of the size of the screen these days in comparison to back then, but its not the boxe. In itself its clearly capable of producing much sharper images.

Two fundamental issues I've picked up are that there is no way to save and exit a game and come back to it where you left off, very annoying.

The other point is I cannot seem to exit a game and go back to the main menu, choose another game and start playing.

The only way to do this it seems is to…
