Fujifilm Unveils the New X Half Camera: A Retro Film Aesthetic in a Portable Package

On May 22, Fujifilm announced the launch of the X Half (FUJIFILM X-HF1), the latest addition to its X series of portable cameras. This new model is designed to capture the essence of retro film photography in a compact and user-friendly device.

Key Features of the X Half

The X Half is a 18-megapixel "half-frame" digital camera that features a vertical sensor and viewfinder. It is equipped with a backlit 1-inch sensor and a 32mm equivalent, f/2.8 fixed-focus lens. The camera is specifically designed to evoke the look and feel of traditional film photography, with a focus on ease of use and portability.

Retro Film Aesthetic

The X Half is all about capturing the charm of vintage film. It comes with a dedicated auxiliary screen that allows users to select from 13 different film simulation styles. Interestingly, the camera only supports JPG format, ensuring that the images produced are true to what you see through the viewfinder—a "what you see is what you get" experience.

Compact and Lightweight Design

Weighing only about 240 grams, the X Half is as portable as a disposable film camera. Its small size makes it easy to carry around in a small bag or even a coat pocket. The camera also features a glass autofocus lens with aspherical lens correction, ensuring sharp and clear images. Additionally, it supports basic 1080×1440 video recording.

Unique Shooting Experience

The X Half offers a traditional optical viewfinder, as opposed to electronic or hybrid systems, providing a more authentic shooting experience. Users can also operate the camera using a vertical 2.4-inch 3:4 touch screen. After capturing photos, users can connect the camera to a dedicated mobile app (to be released shortly after the camera launch) to unlock more features.

Creative Post-Processing

The X Half's mobile app introduces several unique features that enhance the retro film experience. For example, users can create double-image collages that mimic the layout of traditional half-frame cameras, where one film frame contains two images. The app also offers a "film camera mode," which arranges photos into contact sheets of 36, 54, or 72 images, complete with simulated film roll numbers and film simulation styles. Users can even simulate the process of advancing film by "cranking" a virtual film advance lever between shots.

Filters and Effects

To further enhance the retro feel, the X Half offers filters that simulate light leaks and expired film textures. Users can also add 1990s-style date and time stamps to their photos. Since the camera only supports the JPG format, all filters and film styles are embedded directly into the image files, making them uneditable in post-processing.

Summary

The Fujifilm X Half is a perfect blend of modern technology and vintage charm. With its compact design, unique shooting experience, and emphasis on retro film aesthetics, it offers a refreshing alternative for photographers who want to capture moments with a nostalgic touch.
