OPPO Reno16 Pro Review: A Sub-Flagship Powerhouse

Last November’s OPPO Reno15 was a solid, compact daily driver, even if its underpowered processor left us wanting more. Fast forward six months, and OPPO is already back with its refreshed Reno16 lineup.

We’ve spent the last few days testing the all-new OPPO Reno16 Pro. Driven by an upgraded MediaTek Dimensity 9500s chip and a feature-packed camera array, it promises a massive performance jump over its predecessor. Here is our hands-on review.

Standout Style: The 3D Floating Glass Magic

At first glance, the OPPO Reno16 Pro doesn't completely reinvent the wheel, though it does rearrange the camera module for a cleaner look. The real star of the show, however, is the signature "Heartbeat" colorway.

OPPO applied a unique 3D floating pattern onto the lower half of the glossy glass back. This star-trail aesthetic creates an optical illusion that mimics a premium matte texture, making the pattern look like it's leaping right off the surface. In a market flooded with visual copycats, OPPO managed to cook up a totally unique look.

Flip the phone over, and you're greeted by a center punch-hole display bounded by incredibly slim bezels. This completely addresses the chunky bezel issues we called out in our Reno15 review. While there is a tiny plastic bracket sandwiched between the screen and the premium metal frame, it's thankfully barely noticeable. Ultimately, the Reno16 Pro delivers an ultra-premium look that will turn heads instantly.

 

 

Performance: A Sub-Flagship Powerhouse

Under the hood, the Reno16 Pro gets a massive upgrade with the MediaTek Dimensity 9500s chipset. Positioned just beneath MediaTek's top-tier silicon, this processor elevates the phone straight into sub-flagship territory.

The benchmarks speak for themselves: the phone scored a massive 2.76 million on AnTuTu, easily outpacing last year's premium flagships. OPPO also treated this model to lightning-fast UFS 4.1 storage, which is a massive win given soaring component costs. In real-world testing, sequential read/write speeds cleared 2,000 MB/s without breaking a sweat.

Mobile Gaming Performance

Gaming on this device is an absolute breeze. While running Genshin Impact on high frame rate settings, the Reno16 Pro held a buttery-smooth 89 fps average.

Thanks to TSMC’s efficient 3nm process, internal temperatures topped out at a modest 39.2°C. The only catch? The premium metal frame pulls heat away from the internals so well that it gets noticeably warm to the touch during extended gaming marathons.

Cameras: Fun Features Meet Serious Hardware

Instead of just chasing raw megapixel counts, OPPO focuses heavily on creative, social-media-ready features. That said, the hardware specs here are nothing to sneeze at. You get a stacked triple-camera array: a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide, and a 50MP periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom.

For everyday snapshots, the Reno16 Pro delivers signature OPPO reliability with excellent color accuracy and crisp detail. However, don't buy it just for the 200MP mode—it can feel sluggish and is more about bragging rights than practical use. Where it actually shines is providing a crystal-clear 2x digital crop. For long-distance shots, the 3.5x periscope lens does the heavy lifting beautifully, maintaining great usability even stretched to a 7x crop.

 

 

Next-Level Portraits and AI Tools

Portrait photography is where OPPO consistently dominates, and the Reno16 Pro is no exception. Edge detection is incredibly precise, effortlessly separating single strands of hair from a beautifully blurred background. Best of all, skin tones look entirely natural without looking aggressively filtered.

The software is where the real fun begins. The built-in POP Camera app includes nearly ten retro filters—like Instax and vintage CCD camera effects—allowing you to post straight to social media without editing. OPPO also upgraded its 'Live Collage' feature to 'Live Sticker Collage', using AI to instantly cut out your subjects and turn them into dynamic stickers. It's an incredibly engaging feature that our team couldn't stop playing with.

The Verdict: The Complete Mid-Range Package

The Reno lineup has always been OPPO’s bread and butter in the mainstream market, and the Reno16 Pro refines that winning formula. By patching up the performance flaws of its predecessor, OPPO has created a truly well-rounded mid-ranger.

Instead of getting bogged down in hardware arms races, the brand capitalized on what younger users actually care about: trendy film simulations and quick AI editing tools. It's a strategic home run that is bound to appeal to its target audience.
