Pixel 10 Wireless Charging Woes: Cases and Older Chargers Causing Issues

Pixel 10 Wireless Charging Woes

Shortly after its launch, Google's Pixel 10 series, which was positioned to be one of the first major Android phones to support the new Qi2 wireless charging standard, is already facing user complaints regarding its wireless charging capabilities, as reported by CNET.

Users have encountered problems primarily when using accessories like the Pixelsnap wireless charger. The core of the issue seems to lie with phone cases; the charging failures occur whether the case is magnetic or not, creating frustration for new owners who want to protect their devices.

To investigate these claims, CNET conducted its own tests using a Pixel 10 Pro XL, both the first and second-generation Pixel Stand wireless chargers, and three different third-party phone cases. The cases used for the test were:

  • Mous ultra-thin clear case
  • Grecazo ultra-thin magnetic case
  • A generic TPU soft case

The results of the test were conclusive. When any of the three cases were on the Pixel 10 Pro XL, the phone would initiate wireless charging but disconnect after just one to two seconds, making a stable charge impossible. A minor workaround was found with the original Pixel Stand, where placing the phone horizontally allowed it to charge continuously, albeit very slowly. However, this same trick did not work at all with the second-generation Pixel Stand.

Interestingly, the issue does not appear to be universal. Some Pixel 10 Pro owners have reported that their devices charge perfectly fine with a case on, suggesting some variability in either the phones, chargers, or cases being used.

In response to the complaints, Google has officially stated that the Pixel 10 series was not specifically optimized for older Qi wireless chargers. However, the company clarified that this does not mean the phones are incompatible with them. This suggests a compatibility gap rather than a complete failure. CNET concluded that while the new Qi2 standard is backward-compatible, users may have a better experience by simply removing their phone case before placing it on an older wireless charger to avoid these inconsistencies.
