Apple's Next-Gen Studio Display 2 Reportedly in Testing, Codenamed J427

According to a report by MacRumors, evidence found within Apple's software code suggests the company is actively developing a successor to its popular Studio Display. The new model, identified by the codename J427, was mentioned in software code that was likely not intended for public release. With a rumored launch window of early 2026, it is logical that Apple is currently in the testing phase for this next-generation monitor.

At present, specific details about the new Apple Studio Display are limited. However, sources indicate it may incorporate mini-LED backlighting technology. This upgrade would represent a significant leap forward, offering substantial improvements in brightness, contrast ratio, and overall color quality compared to the current model.

Adding to the intrigue, the code also revealed a reference to a second display codenamed J527. The identity of J527 remains unclear. Earlier this year, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported that Apple was developing two versions of the Studio Display and would ultimately select one for release. Therefore, J527 could potentially be the second prototype of the Studio Display 2.

Alternatively, J527 could be the codename for a new version of the Pro Display XDR. However, Gurman has previously suggested that a second-generation Pro Display XDR is not a high priority for Apple at this time, making this theory less likely. It is worth noting that Apple has not released a new monitor since the original Studio Display launched in 2022.

The launch of the next-generation Studio Display is likely to be timed with the release of new Mac computers powered by the M5 chip. These new Macs are also anticipated to debut in early 2026, creating a synergistic hardware refresh. It is still uncertain whether the new monitor will be officially named "Studio Display 2" or if Apple will choose a different branding for the product.
