Fujifilm Unveils the GFX Eterna 55: A $16,499 Medium Format Cinema Powerhouse

Fujifilm has officially entered the high-end cinema market with the announcement of its GFX Eterna 55 cinema camera. This new release is centered around a massive 1.02-megapixel 44x33mm medium format CMOS sensor and Fujifilm's renowned Film Simulation technology, aiming to deliver unparalleled cinematic quality.

At the core of the GFX Eterna 55 is the 102MP GFX 102MP CMOS II HS sensor. This large-format sensor is complemented by 20 built-in Film Simulation modes, allowing cinematographers to achieve a distinct, film-like aesthetic directly in-camera. For maximum flexibility in post-production, it also features the F-Log 2 C profile and supports the real-time import of up to 16 custom LUTs, streamlining the process of adding a cinematic grade to footage on set.

On the hardware front, the camera is packed with professional-grade features. It includes a built-in variable ND filter for precise exposure control without altering shutter speed or aperture. Internally, it supports three Apple ProRes codecs: 422HQ, 422, and 422 LT, with HEVC as an optional format. For external recording, the HDMI port can output up to 8K 30P 12-bit RAW video. Furthermore, the camera supports a 4:3 open gate mode, capturing the full sensor area at up to 48 FPS.

Fujifilm has specifically designed the GFX Eterna 55 for single operators and small production teams. The body weighs approximately 2 kilograms and features dual 3-inch displays on both sides, enabling the camera operator and a focus puller to view parameters and menus simultaneously. A standout feature is its power system; it uses NP-W235 batteries that provide up to 30 minutes of shooting time and are hot-swappable, allowing for battery changes without powering down the camera.

The Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 comes with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $16,499.95. Pre-orders are set to begin on September 15th, with the camera expected to be officially available for purchase starting next month.
