Nothing Phone (4a) Review: A Mature Design, Sufficient Specs, and a Refreshing Anti-AI Camera

Since the launch of the Nothing Phone (1) in July 2022, the brand has carved out a unique path with its distinctive design and solid performance. What was once considered a novelty has now established a firm foothold in overseas markets. With the company announcing a "new chapter" for the brand, the newly released Nothing Phone (4a) serves as a milestone for the "Nothing 2.0" era. After spending time with this new device, here is our in-depth review.

Nothing's Style: More Mature, More Restrained

The Nothing Phone (4a) is instantly recognizable as a Nothing device, yet it shows a clear evolution in design philosophy. It retains the signature transparent backplate with stylized internal components, exposed screws, and distinct typography. However, where previous models embraced a futuristic, circuit-board aesthetic, the Phone (4a) opts for minimalism, using simple lines and perforations to abstractly represent elements like the battery and speaker. While this new direction is clean, the simplicity of the lower half can make the phone's visual center feel a bit high. Despite this shift, the build quality and feel remain excellent, with a solid, "glass brick"-like presence in hand.

A clever update comes to the Glyph Bar. To solve the color deviation issues seen in previous models, Nothing has "pixelated" the light strips. Each pixel now contains three LEDs, which eliminates uneven lighting and allows for smoother, more refined brightness transitions. The front of the phone, however, is more conventional. The 6.78-inch 120Hz display features symmetrical bezels, but their thickness is notable by today's standards, reminiscent of an iPhone XR. Given its target market outside of the hyper-competitive Chinese smartphone scene, this is an acceptable compromise.

Specs Tailored for the Market: Good Enough is the Goal

Positioned as a mid-range device for international markets, the Phone (4a) is powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor and is available in 8+128GB, 8+256GB, and 12+256GB configurations. For everyday use, performance is smooth and fluid, with 12GB of RAM easily handling multitasking with lightweight apps from the Google Play Store. However, the phone shows its limits under heavy gaming loads. While its performance might not be competitive in some markets at its price point, it stands out in regions like Europe, where similarly priced phones often feature much weaker processors. The Phone (4a) offers a compelling package of unique design and reliable hardware that is more than sufficient for its intended audience, though one trade-off for this adequate performance is a noticeable shutter lag in the camera.

A Commendable 'Anti-AI' Approach to Imaging

The Phone (4a) features a dual 50MP setup for its wide and telephoto cameras, complemented by a 12MP ultra-wide lens. Both the wide and telephoto lenses are equipped with OIS. In good lighting and at native focal lengths (1x/3.5x), the camera delivers impressive sharpness and detail. However, at non-native zoom levels, the limitations in resolution become apparent, with some smudging on complex textures like foliage. What truly sets the Phone (4a) apart is its imaging philosophy. While Nothing acknowledges using AI to optimize telephoto shots, the implementation is remarkably restrained. The photos avoid the aggressive, overly processed look common in many AI-enhanced cameras, preserving a more natural aesthetic. This "anti-AI" approach, combined with the brand's signature high-contrast color tuning, results in images with excellent character and texture.

A Worthy Start to Nothing's New Chapter

The Nothing Phone (4a) marks a significant step in the brand's evolution from a niche geek gadget to a refined mainstream product. It trades some of its earlier rebellious spirit for a more balanced and restrained product philosophy, feeling like the brand has matured past its "rebellious phase."

While the Nothing Phone (4a) is best suited for the "comfort zone" of the international market, its arrival provides a fresh perspective in a world of homogenous designs. By carving its own path with a focus on design, balanced performance, and a unique imaging philosophy, Nothing continues to embody a spirit of rebellion in its own, more mature way.
