Apple to Launch AirPods Pro 3: Focus on Heart Rate Monitoring, Modest Noise-Cancelling and Audio Improvements

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg has revealed that Apple will unveil its new AirPods Pro 3 at the "Awe Dropping" 10 a.m. PDT. Despite the introduction of the new H3 chip, the AirPods Pro 3 will not see significant enhancements in active noise-cancelling (ANC) or audio quality.

The primary innovation of the AirPods Pro 3 is the introduction of heart rate monitoring, a feature that utilizes LED optical sensors to emit light pulses into the ear canal's blood vessels and calculate heart rate data based on blood flow changes. This technology, previously used in Powerbeats Pro 2, will allow users to sync their heart rate data with Apple Health and third-party fitness apps. However, due to limitations in measuring blood oxygen saturation accurately within the ear, this feature will not support blood oxygen detection.

In terms of design, the AirPods Pro 3 is said to have a re-engineered structure that improves fit and comfort by adjusting the curvature and material distribution. Specific design changes remain undisclosed.

While the H3 chip is expected to boost audio performance, Gurman emphasizes that the upgrade mainly focuses on sensor data processing and energy efficiency. Analysts suggest that Apple might enhance noise-cancelling through firmware updates in the future, but no new speaker units or microphone arrays have been introduced at the hardware level. This shift in strategy indicates that Apple is moving its TWS earbuds from being purely audio devices to health wearable devices.
