What Went Down at MWC 2023: A Highlight on Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro
The Mobile World Congress (MWC) is the tech conference to keep up with if you like to stay in the loop with all the latest developments in the industry. When manufacturers and developers want to launch a smartphone or gadget with a unique new feature, it’ll most likely happen at MWC where a huge variety of tech enthusiasts will be gathered. The tech players we expected to see at this year’s long-awaited conference in Barcelona, Nubia, Samsung, and OnePlus did not disappoint in their delivery, and every piece of tech that was on display at the conference was unique and worth taking a peek at.
ZTE Nubia premiered two futuristic pieces of technology with the Nubia Neovision Glass that delivers AR displays in a more realistic frame design, and they partnered with Leia to create the glasses-free Nubia Pad 3D. OnePlus took the opportunity to launch the OnePlus 11 Concept phone with a revolutionary liquid cooling mechanism, plus Samsung put together a unique Flex Display where attendees could interact with concepts designed by the Display division of Samsung. Another showcase that was definitely for the books was the Xiaomi 13 global debut, with the tech giant launching three variations in the series.
Xiaomi 13 Series
Xiaomi 13
To deliver a range of powerful smartphones with impressive camera quality, Xiaomi has partnered with Leica in their latest series of devices. Leica is a German company whose main focus is to create high-end cameras and lenses, and they’ve managed to incorporate a 50 MP main camera, plus a 12 MP ultra-wide lens and a 10 MP telephoto lens into the standard Xiaomi 13 smartphone. With a retail price of €999, Xiaomi 13 features a 6.3-inch 1080p display with a rapid 120 Hz refresh rate supported by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 which is the same hardware offered by the Samsung Galaxy S23. The battery is smaller than some of the newer devices currently on the market at 4500 mAh, but it has 50W wireless charging capabilities and 67W wired charging.
Xiaomi 13 Pro
According to Phone Arena, the Xiaomi 13 Pro may just be the next camera champion with its impressive trio of 50 MP cameras tuned by top-tier Leica technology. The main camera lens on the Xiaomi 13 Pro is the powerful 1-inch Sony IMX989, plus it also has a 50 MP telephoto lens and a 50 MP ultra-wide lens. The screen on the Pro is larger and more vivid, boasting a 6.7-inch 1440p Dolby Vision capable AMOLED display, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The battery on the Xiaomi 13 Pro is also larger than the standard device, packing 4820 mAh of battery power with a 120 W ultra-fast charge that can juice the phone up in less than 20 minutes. Though both phones are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, the Xiaomi 13 Pro has 12GB of RAM while the Xiaomi 13 only has 8GB. This phone is set to retail for €1,299 but it’s important to note that both the Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro will not be available in the U.S., according to an article on The Verge.
Xiaomi 13 Lite
If you are looking forward to owning the latest Xiaomi 13 but are a bit discouraged by the prices, the 13 Lite is set to be the most affordable in the series retailing at less than €500. It runs on a less powerful but impressive Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, and the battery is as strong as the Xiaomi 13 with 4500 mAh of power and 67 W charging capacity. Another significant difference with the Xiaomi 13 Lite is the camera system which is not backed by Leica, but it does feature a powerful trio of cameras that include a 50 MP wide-angle lens, an 8 MP ultra-wide angle lens, and a 2 MP macro lens.
The Future Is Bright
All in all, the 2023 MWC delivered an exciting release of new tech under the themes of 5G, FinTech, OpenNet, and CloudTech, including new wearable gear like the Xiaomi Watch S1 Pro, and Huawei’s 2-in-1 watch buds. It’s exciting to think about what the future has in store and the sorts of tech that could be announced later this year or in the coming years, such as the foldable screen concepts presented at the Samsung Flex Display booth.
